From One Demon Writer to Another--Brava!

I had the pleasure of meeting Rachel at GCLS this year. She had horns, fangs, was...oh wait...I think we agreed to keep that part a secret. Anyway, we both write demon books, not because we are, but because there is something uber sexy about a woman who will risk her life in the fighting of them. She has sexy down pat in this sequel to The Demon Abraxas. In this twisting and turning adventure we get a chance to know witch, Sabel Young and Ana Khoury, who is possessed by Abraxas, a demon who is a bit bossy, opinionated, and very powerful.

As someone who writes in this genre, I am very particular about the research done in regards to possessions, demons, and witches, and I can safely say that Calish has done her job well in taking what we think we know and creating viable and realistic characters and weaving them into a plot that is fast-paced and entertaining. Her world building skills are excellent, so if you are a reader who wants to fall into the magical realm, Calish has written a series that propels the reader into the magical, the mystical, and the mystery that is the demonic world.

Whether or not I had met her in person, I'd be giving this 5 stars because her demonology,witchcraft, and world building knowledge are outstanding and THAT is what I am looking for whenever I pick up books in this genre. From one demon writer to another, I say "Bravo, Rachel! Carry on!"

Witches, demons, Gods and Goddess, oh my!

This book is a sequel to The Demon Abraxas. Author Rachel Calish has once again done a brilliant job of building "the unseen world". It features Sabel Young, a witch and professor, and Ana Khoury, who Abraxas is "staying with". There are many twists and turns in this story, including a visit to South Dakota for the funeral of Ana's father where she must spend time with her brother who tormented her as a child and tried to rape her as a teen. Once the funeral is over, Ana, Sabel, Lily and her daughter Gabriella, must try to get safely back to San Francisco.
The Demon Gabriella is a good read with well developed characters and back story. Between the demons, Gods, and Goddesses, readers can enjoy the read, and only hope that it's fiction!

Extensive Analysis of 186 Biotech Companies

Wow!!! This is an amazing book for anyone serious about investing or considering investing in Biotech Stocks.

Download a Kindle sample to review a decent amount of pages detailing analysis of some of the 186 Biotech Companies covered, starting with the letter "a" up to the point of ARDX; snapshot details of IPO date, Number of Shares issued, Partnerships, Board of Directors Bloodline details, Pipeline, Focus & Catalysts. Status of test Phase progress & Phase approval timelines.

In 7 bullet points of the Introduction, Jim Cramer details the focal points of analysis, which include Financials, EBITDA, Revenues, Cash Flows, Long-Term Debt, Percentage of top share holders & Institutional Ownership. I utilize a similar strategy for my analysis ideas and this pretty much nails it.

Publish date November 17, 2015, not yet dated, as company fundamentals quickly change and at times new products are added to company pipelines. The research contained is a great place to start.

Investing in Biotechs is risky & requires regular maintenance/monitoring, due to constant changes in the field, though as long as you invest in companies capable of upholding a strong base of generating revenue & cash flow outweighing their R&D expenditures, have an established line of FDA approved products and continue to steadily build/grow their product pipeline, by establishing successful upcoming Phase III approvals, solidity may be maintained & would naturally follow for the long term.

Very well researched and detailed. Two thumbs up.

Her doctoral thesis, L’Exil de James Joyce ou l’art du remplacement was published in 1968 (as The Exile of James Joyce in 1972). His first novel was Inside (1969). Her best known works are The Newly Born Woman (written with Catherine Cl�ment) and the inspiring essay “The Laugh of the Medusa” (both 1975). In feminist theory, Cixous’ most influential works have been The Newly Born Woman, “The Laugh of the Medusa”, and “Castration or Decapitation”. By 1991, H�l�ne Cixous had written some 50 novels, plays, books of poetry, essays and texts (today it’s 70+ works, and includes: 23 poetry books, 5 plays and 6 books of essays). She has been aligned with the French publishing house Des Femmes, and collaborated with the experimental Th��tre du Soleil (Cixous has worked for years with the theatre director Ariane Mnouchkine). Cixous’ plays include Black Sail, White Sail, Portrait of Dora, Drums On the Dam and The Perjured City. In the late 1970s and 1980s, H�l�ne Cixous became the most frequently cited of French feminists and feminist philosophers. Following Angst (1977), Cixous’ feminism became more militant (as with many other feminists), and was associated with the Politique et Psychoanalyse (‘Psych et Po’) women’s political group, founded by Antoinette Fouque. Cixous felt she had reached an intellectual limit, and needed to immerse herself in the politics of relationships between women. H�l�ne Cixous’ prose works of the Eighties included La Bataille d’Arcachon (1987), concerning the relations between love, presence and absence, the self and alterity; Manne aux Mandelstams aux Mandelas (1988) was about the Russian poet, Osip Mandelstam, who died in the Stalin era, and Nelson Mandela; Entre l’�criture (1986) is a collection of writing about writing; Jours de l’an (1990) concerns notions of authorship, the relationship between the writer and writing. As related to Elliott, Fedders's story moves from her birth in Maryland in 1943, through 16 years as an abused wife, to her divorce in 1985 from John R. Fedders, an official of the Securities Exchange Commission. The couple lived graciously in Washington, where in the privacy of their home the husband beat his wife and browbeat their five sons. In a less melodramatic telling, the book would more forcefully call needed attention to the problem of abused women. It is made abundantly clear that Fedders suffered brutality but the reason why she endured it for so many years is not satisfactorily explained. Elliott's contention that the victim's Catholic upbringing trained her to submissiveness is not entirely convincing. And there is no analysis of why the husband, with the same religious background, became a dangerous bully. Elliott is a reporter for Washingtonian magazine. Should be required reading for middle school students

I read this book initially 25 years ago, and I think it should be required reading for middle school students in that the message is "Girls, you don't have to take this from anyone," and "Boys--this is NOT how you treat girls!" My late grandmother told me my freshman year of college that it's now time to start looking for a husband. I thought, "noooooo....I need to GRADUATE first!" I'm glad I didn't heed her advice, as one of my best friends from college was more "MRS" degree-oriented, and she later had to escape her abusive marriage. This book taught me a lot, and I'm proud of Ms. Fedders' courage.

When Wife-Beating was "Acceptable"

People tend to live according to social norms and mores, rather than according to laws. When readers ask "why did she stay with an abusive man for 17 years" the answer is clear; leaving the husband wasn't "acceptable". Fedders would have gotten no support if she'd left her husband in the early years of their marriage (or later even). The courts would've given custody to her husband, she wouldn't have gotten any alimony, and she might've had trouble getting a job (employers could refuse to hire a divorced woman). Besides, her husband was "respectable" and she would've had no advocate. In those days, women were trapped. The codified law that says "beating someone is illegal" didn't apply to the marriage; it was the norms and mores that ruled, and those norms and mores said that wife beating was to be tolerated "tolerated for the good of the marriage".

Did Fedder's Catholic upbringing have anything to do with it? Maybe so. If she'd gone to talk to a Priest, what would he have done? In those days, the Priest wouldn't call the husband to his office and chew him out! He wouldn't threaten to excommunicate him for beating his wife! If she'd told the Priest "why must I stay in a marriage where I'm being abused" he would've said "you're a Catholic, make the best of it". What could she do?

In the 1980's, I saw campaigns in the form of TV ads, TV sitcom episodes, and magazine articles, encouraging women to stand up to abusive husbands. Spousal abuse was becoming a public issue, and people were beginning to see it as "unacceptable". But years earlier, it was simply tolerated. Back in the 1960's, men were rarely arrested for beating their wives or children. Beating one's wife was on par (according to mores and norms of the time) with breaking in a pet. Watch THE BURNING BED if you want an example.

We debate the merits of "social engineering", where masses of people change their attitudes. Some say it's "changing times" that change people, but books like these really can "engineer" social norms. By the 1990's, not only was wife-beating seen as unacceptable, but so was sexual harassment, child molestation, tenant harassment, and other forms of injustice. There was a time when sexual abuse was rarely reported, but now it's taken more seriously. Look at the Catholic Church sex abuse lawsuits as an example. Nobody is immune.

Even today, people can be trapped in abusive relationships, and it doesn't always involve beatings. For instance, a mentally ill husband controls his family by threatening suicide, and pressures his wife into doing everything his way. Or an abusive mother threatens to kill her sons pets if the boy doesn't obey.

The bottom line is, when the Fedders were married, there was no place to turn to if you were in an abusive marriage.

Shattered Dreams

This book was very good.

Charlotte really went through some very hard times with her husband

John. I am glad to hear she was able to break away and control her own life. I was shocked to read just how mean this man could be.

I first saw this movie on TV some years back and it was good but the book is so much better. It goes into a lot more detail about

her marriage to John. I hope that John has gotten help for his need to control everyone. Who did he think he was?
