REview of Communication text for Beginning Nursing Students

I was looking for a communication textbook for beginning nursing ( Practical Nursing) students. For this purpose I found the text too advanced. For myself as a instructor - the content was very good and for graduate nurses and nurses with nursing practice experience it is excellent and well supported by research but for beginning students too theoretical and less practical. The exercises are interesting and good but not sufficient - for students additional pictorials and; more practical points of emphasis with application of content; with more interesting format to aid in studying would have been helpfull.

I thought I would not like nor keep this textbook

I thought I would not like nor keep this textbook. The stories in it are actually very fascinating and a joy to read. As a new teacher, I have learned a lot through reading the stories from all the different teachers. I had to buy this for my graduate program, but it was totally worth the purchase. It is such an interesting book. I use it all the time in essays, even when its not required to refer to it I still do.

Greeks in Venice - the Title Says it All

It can be claimed with some confidence that Greek refugees in Italy were responsible for triggering the Renaissance so it is worth investigating who some of these guys were and what they got up to. What Geanakoplos does is explore the lives and careers of five Greek scholars, along with Erasmus. There is an opening section about the Venice and its Greek colonies like Crete (pages 13-70).

The first Greek scholar (or Disseminators as Geanakoplos calls them) is Michael Apostolis (pages 73 - 110). Apostolis was a minor scholar but Geanakoplos includes him as a typical example the first generation of refugee scholars.

Marcus (or Mark) Musurus (pages 111- 166) was from Crete. His is famous for being the Greek teacher of Erasmus and for being an editor for the Aldine Press. Musurus was a skilled linguist and was responsible for editing the Lexicon of Hesychius.

Arsenios Apostolis (pages 167-200) was the son of Michael Apostolis. He comes across as an unlikeable individual, mainly due to his attempt to seize the episcopal throne of Monemvasisa from the Orthodox and to set himself up as a Uniate bishop.

Zacharias Calliergis (pages 201-222) was also from Crete. He set up a Greek printing press in Rome and developed a cursive Greek font.

Demetrius Ducas (pages 223- 255) worked on the Polyglot Bible in Spain as well for the Aldine Press in Venice.

Desiderius Erasmus (pages 256-278) is so well known I am surprised he was included in this book.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no chapter on Bessarion. His role in promoting Greek studies and collecting manuscripts is well known but I don't think there is a suitable account of his scholarly actives in English. Geanakoplos does not really explore the religious side of many of these scholars. In order to function in Italian society they all converted to the Catholic Church. I felt the issue of these converts sincerity (with the exception of Arsenios Apostolic who seems to have been a fanatical Catholic) have been interesting to investigate. Nevertheless, Geanakoplos does a great job at exploring the roles of his subjects. The quotes Geanakoplos makes from the correspondence of his subjects really adds to his biographical surveys.

I really enjoyed the story

First and foremost, this is a fictional story based on someone who is very present if you are even the slightest bit open to it. I really enjoyed the story. It has a variety of elements that teach readers the theories behind Madam Pele and does so in a comical way. I have had my own experiences with Madam Pele, I have witnessed other people have their own experiences with Madam Pele, and every time it is more and more beautiful. This story captures an element that I would have never though about. Assuming we think of them at all, we think of super human forces as being much bigger than us naturally, and often find them when we are the ones that need some sort of therapy (I use this term loosely). Yes, though- why wouldn't they need to vent sometimes too? This story is cute. It made me smile. I'm thankful to have been able to enjoy it. I will say, I knew a lot about Madam Pele prior to reading it. If you don't know much about her, you might do a little bit of research first, and then read the story. If you do know about her, get ready for an adventure that will probably entice you to get to know her a little more!

Few American military units of World War II have such a multitude of myths attached to its name as the 99th Infantry Battalion. A separate infantry unit made up of "personnel who were either native born Norwegians or who were of Norwegian extraction and had a working knowledge of the Norwegian Language". Earmarked for a possible invasion of German occupied Norway, this unit underwent rigorous winter and combat training over a period of close to two years both in USA and Great Britain. The plans of an allied invasion in Norway were never implemented. Instead, this unit served and fought as a regular infantry unit throughout the Allied campaigns in France, Belgium and Germany before finally arriving in Norway in the summer of 1945. In this book the author tells of the battalion's participation of the liberation of Belgian Limburg in September 1944. The book is packed with accounts and photographs which has never been published before and the author Robert Antoni Pisani (b. 1969) shares details from his research and from the manuscript of the forthcoming book about the 99th Infantry Battalion.

Long Awaited Book

This book is one many have been looking forward to; there hasn't been a book about the 99th Infantry Batallion (Separate) since Gerd Nyquist's book, Bataljon 99, published in Norway (with an English translation) in 1981.

Antoni Pisani's book is the result of years of work, including on-site reasearch, collection of documents, and interviews with soldiers of the 99th and local Belgians. This is the story of a particular episode of World War II history in which the 99th Batallion participated: the Canal Drive - the liberation of the Limburg Province of Belgium.

Pisani not only presents the facts, but gives us a picture of the individual soldiers. By giving specific information about soldiers, telling us where they are from, sometimes a little about their personalities or interests and talents, he makes the soldiers alive to us. We aren't given information or details about all the soldiers, of course, but enough of some to give us a real feel for who these soldiers were.

The photographs in the book are mostly ones taken during the war either by the soldiers or local Belgians and they add much interest to the story. As the soldiers come alive with the glimpses given of them in the narrative, so the area, the action and the people come to alive through these photographs taken so long ago.

U.S.Army documents and maps further add to the story. Particularly revealing of the reality of war, is the copy of one soldier's toe tag. It shows us that this is not just a story; it is history.

This is a history book that is enjoyable to read and very interesting.

99th Infantry Battalion's Story Continues

I just got this book and read it today from our friends here at Amazon. I must say that it is a wonderful book with a very focused personal history concerning the fabled 99th. It has many pictures and personal narrative from veterans of the 99th, in the style of the orignal History of the 99th Infantry Battalion by Harold Bergen, and Gerd Nyquist's Bataljon 99. I think in this Mr. Pisani pays homage to the authors who chronicled the Norwegian American Battalion before him. It is a slim volume also like the original Bergen book published in 1945 and numbers under 100 pages. Despite this fact, the book is jampacked with great history and photographs. Mr. Pisani's next project is "The Brooklyn Battalion", I just learned recently. It is about the Battalion commander, Lt. Col.Harold D. Hansen. I hope Mr. Pisani also retells the history of the OSS spin off group from the 99th, the Norwegian Special Operations group commanded by then Major William Colby. I look forward to reading Mr. Pisani's future works about this great WW2 U.S. Army unit.

Finally the history with some heart and soul!

I have been collecting information about this unit's history for years. This is the most expansion of information I have seen in years. It also removes all the sugar coating from the harshness of war.

A. Van Jordan, visiting assistant professor of English at the University of North Carolina, lives in Greensboro. He won the Whiting Award in 2004.

Struggling to achieve success? Here’s Your Solution!

I feel like this is a must-read for anyone wanting to improve their life, whether you want that success to be in terms of wealth, fitness, romance, or whatever.

I’m 34 and have always struggled with motivation and achieving the kind of success I’d always imagined myself enjoying by now. I would have motivation in fits and starts (usually at the beginning of the year), but I couldn’t ever keep it up over a long enough period of time to actually make any real positive changes in my life. I would make resolutions that would backfire. I would force myself to do something and then never do it again. I could never maintain an exercise habit.

I got my copy of The Identity Switch, feeling quite incredulous. But at this point, I really wanted to make a change.

It was well worth reading. The section on habits was eye-opening for me, and showed me why I couldn’t get my resolutions to stick and why habits don't work. And then I read about the Identity Shifting, and I felt like a lightbulb had gone off in my head. I could immediately see myself more clearly and I knew what I had to do (mentally) to get my life on the track I wanted.

I also got hold of the free book that author offers as a gift (The Productivity Switch) and I think it’s a perfect complement to this one.

Since reading these two books, I’ve started to change things around, starting with the Identity Shift that the author talks about. I already have a habit in place (it’s related to losing weight) and I’ve been working out consistently (and happily!) for once!

I’m very excited about the things I’m going to do, instead of forcing myself to do things as a chore or something I “should do”. This book has been a real eye-opener for me.

How to get your brain's wiring to work for you not against you

I really enjoyed this book. It's all about getting your brain to work for you instead of resisting what you should be doing. For example, you know you should be taking out the trash or doing a workout, but you never seem to do it. This book explains why and what to do about it. It shows you how to get your brain on your side!

This is a great resource for anyone who wants to be more productive. And other than couch potatoes, that is pretty much all of us.

Worth every page

A five star review means that I love this book.

After applying a few methods in this book, I'm able to change a few of my habits considerably. (My mom and wife are already wondering how.)

I love this book for,

- Its on the premise that getting better and changing habits easy, provided you know how

- The know-how of the same is outlined and given in an easy to understand and adapt way

- The concepts of change are written in understandable way

- The writing is smooth

- Author AJ Winters, definitely is a blessed writer

- A recommended material for those who are unable to change to better

Moreover, the other book which came 'free' with this, 'The Productivity Switch' is again something worth mentioning.

- The way the book is written is unique.

- I urge the reader of this review to consider the purchase of Identity Switch and get the other book too, for that again is a worthy read for personal betterment.
