About the Author

John Mack Faragher

John Mack Faragher is an Arthur Unobskey professor of American history and the director of the Howard R. Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers and Borders at Yale University. Born in Arizona and raised in southern California, he received his B.A. at the University of California, Riverside, and his Ph.D. at Yale University. He is the author of Women and Men on the Overland Trail (1979), Sugar Creek: Life on the Illinois Prairie (1986), Daniel Boone: The Life and Legend of an American Pioneer (1992), The American West: A New Interpretive History (2000) and A Great and Noble Scheme: The Tragic Story of the Expulsion of the French Acadians from their American Homeland (2005).

Mari Jo Buhle

Mari Jo Buhle is a William R. Kenan, Jr. University professor emerita of American civilization and history at Brown University specializing in American women’s history. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is the author of Women and American Socialism, 1870-1920 (1981) and Feminism and Its Discontents: A Century of Struggle with Psychoanalysis (1998). She is also the co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Left (second edition, 1998). Buhle held a fellowship (1991-1996) from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She is currently an honorary fellow of the history department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Daniel Czitrom is a professor of history at Mount Holyoke College. Born and raised in New York City, he received his B.A. from the State University of New York at Binghamton and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of Media and the American Mind: From Morse to McLuhan (1982), which won the First Books Award of the American Historical Association and has been translated into Spanish and Chinese. He is the co-author of Rediscovering Jacob Riis: Exposure Journalism and Photography in Turn of the Century New York (2008). He has served as a historical consultant and been featured as an on-camera commentator for several documentary film projects, including the PBS productions New York : A Documentary Film, American Photography: A Century of Images and The Great Transatlantic Cable.�He is currently writing New York Exposed: How a Gilded Age Police Scandal Shocked the Nation and Launched the Progressive Era (Oxford).

Susan H. Armitage is a professor of history and women’s studies emerita at Washington State University, where she was a Claudius O. and Mary R. Johnson distinguished professor. She earned her Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Among her many publications on western women’s history are three co-edited books, The Women’s West (1987), So Much To Be Done: Women on the Mining and Ranching Frontier (1991) and Writing the Range: Race, Class, and Culture in the Women’s West (1997). She served as�editor of the feminist journal Frontiers from 1996 to 2002.� Her most recent publication, co-edited with Laurie Mercier, is Speaking History: Oral Histories of the American Past, 1865-Present (2009).

i dont often give digital purchases a one star. this particular one is getting one because it is simply incompatible with all forms of technology that i own. i am an individual who has sustained significant vision loss due to a combat related injury. this book is not compatible with the kindle 3g keyboard, the kindle paper white, or even my windows 10 laptop. thus the only medium in which i could read this was my Iphone 6 plus. not really an option. please either format your books to work with an actual kindle or at least patch them to work with windows 10 as they dont even work with windows 8 yet.

this book gave so much info that i never learned and it truly delved into the cultural depth of the states and the dynamics of race politics and money and it was the most honest and accurate book historically ive read, i love this book and wouldnt sell it back, its a keeper*

About the Author
P. G. O'Neill, a native Londoner, is Professor of Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in 1957 with a thesis on traditional Japanese drama. His publications include Japanese Names, A Guide to No, Early No Drama, An Introduction to Written Japanese (with S. Yanada), and A Programmed Introduction to Literary-Style Japanese.

What Every Kanji Learner Needs

A few months ago, I spoke with an Ivy League student who had gone to Japan a year before knowing no Japanese and came out fluent in spoken and written Japanese. When I asked how he learned all the Kanji in such an apparently efficient and effective manner, he pulled out this book and lauded it to the skies. You want this book. I am currently learning Japanese, so I know how all you Kanji learners feel. Whether you like learning Kanji or not (personally, I do), this book is probably perfect for your needs. This is true quite simply because this book has everything. It lists 2000 Kanji that it deems "essential," which are roughly the same Kanji as the Joyo Kanji that the Japanese Ministry of Education has deemed "essential" for reading Japanese (although this book was roughly based on the earlier Toyo Kanji set, from which the Joyo Kanji set was developed). Each Kanji is written in beautiful calligraphy and in what appears to be ballpoint pen, which shows one the beauty of each character while showing how the non-calligraphers of us should draw each Kanji. Stroke order is included, which is a MUST for learning Kanji. The On and Kun (compound/solitary or Chinese/native pronounciations, roughly) pronounciations are included (with all relvant pronounciations), words using the Kanji in question are listed, the English meanings of the Kanji for each reading are given, and the modern Chinese pronounciation and a mneumonic aid for many Kanji are also given. Superb. As if that was not enough, each Kanji only uses radicals and word examples covered in earlier Kanji, and each Kanji's secion could be conveniently cut out to make a great set of flash cards. Indecies of Kanji by reading, stroke number, and English meaning (for radicals, at least) are given, and they are GREAT. The introduction is also informative and interesting. The only book I've seen that can compare to this book is Halpern's Kanji Learner Dictionary, but both books have their advantages and disadvantages- while Halpern's book is more comprehensive, the order in which Kanji are presented seems to make it more of a reference work than a learner's book. This book cannot hurt you and is most definitely worth the money. I cannot vouch for its long-term effectiveness (yet), but it's working just fine now and I think I'll be able to in the future.

It's good, but...

If you're a beginner at Japanese, don't buy this book. You most likely won't understand a lot of the examples, and there is no point to know 100+ kanji and not have the ability to use them in sentences.

If you're past beginner stage, buy this book but be warned. As others have already stated, the pronunciations are giving in romaji. While this may not seem like a good idea, it is important if you intend to take any Japanese Proficiency tests, which will require that you are able to identify the correct kana equivalent to various kanji. Also, the example words given are often VERY obscure and often not even used. My current Japanese professor, who is a native of Japan and has a Ph.D. in Japanese Language, did not think that some of the examples were actual words. Third, the examples do not show how all pronunciations are used, so you are often required to look up words in a dictionary to find an example. This is very difficult when the kanji in question is not the first letter in the word. Lastly, the book gives EVERY pronunciation for each kanji. That might sound nice, but I have encountered some pronunciations that are so archaic it seems no Japanese person uses them now.

So, buy it for a well ordered introduction to kanji. It introduces the characters in an order which is beneficial for memorization and usually succeeds in keeping the simplest/building-block kanji at the beginning so one can determine how meanings are derived. Although, chi, blood, is number 300 something, while sara, plate, from which chi is derived, is 1891...weird, huh?

Honestly, I think it's a good learning tool, but you'll need some other books to fill in its gaps.

Good buy for kanji stroke order and learning, but....

I bought this book to take an indipendent study at my college. My plan was to study/learn 500 Kanji this semester. I am currently at about 120, and the book has been the most used item in the study. It does a very good job of teaching stroke order, written and typed writings of the kanji. The only problem is that because it only uses kanji the book has already taught in the vocabulary examples for the kanji the examples are a little odd sounding to a native speaker of Japanese. For example: the kanji for koe or voice gives the example of shounen no koegawari or the braking of voice. Where a more useful way to use the kanji would be to use it in ichikoe or a shout. It is just a little odd some times. As long as you have a way to check some of the deffinitions then this is a very good book. It is also very useful to have the back of the book to look up forgotten kanji. Good book, but a little odd in some parts.

Not for the faint of heart

Whoa, this is hard core BDSM. If you're into major punishment and violence, you'll really like it, but there's no romance here. Pure dominance and submission in a way that I found so degrading it really turned my stomach. The writing wasn't bad, but there were typos and other technical issues. But mostly the subject matter just wasn't my cup of tea. I don't mind BDSM or kinky sex in a book; I usually like it even, but this was way too over the top for me. Just want to make sure any future readers know what they're getting.

this book could of been really good but there was no compassion or kindness shown to the girl she was rarely talked to she was brutalized and raped over and over the master her husband was a brute and very cruel i wish this woman would of fought against things done to her or at least some compassion shown to her.

This is a very short book of about 80 pages. It summarizes the work of Jensen, Rushton and Lynn. There is nothing new in it but it has some utility in that it has many major findings in one place.

Far From Complete. But Persuasive.

A bit short, but powerful. I do NOT agree with the author's conclusions. Nevertheless, he does accurately present evidence to support his claims. Intelligence is most certainly related to genetics and brain size relative to body size. Intelligence is measurable. Certain groups have measurably higher intelligence than other groups. These matters are no longer at issue. Whether there is some hard and fast thing as "Race" is certainly debatable. Despite the pseudo-science of race hucksters, politicians and assorted ideologues, it appears there is no such thing as Race. This kind of scholarship is needed to debunk the claims of Racists and Politicians that all individuals can perform at the same levels, and we should waste billions of dollars trying to turn morons into geniuses.
