Great book for technophobes!

Great instructional book. I hate electronics, electrical theory, and government-required testing, and I STILL PASSED ,
Read/studied the book 3x, and relied on my college physics education to help. The author, Mr. West, has an obvious love of ham radio, and loves to share his incredible knowledge!
I was intellectually challenged by the testing depth, but this book is a God-send! Thanks!

Best I've found

I purchased this for my family so they could study for the latest Technician license test. While I did not read this one, I did read Gordon's 2010-2014 Technician book, as well as the General 2011-2015 (passed both, btw). I had a few other books that I worked with (i.e., the ARRL offerings) but honestly, for someone completely new to this field, Gordon's approach really worked for me.

He gives you some tips/tricks for remembering the answers, explains why the answers are the right answers; and also, most importantly, identifies those questions that are really thrown in there to annoy you (and will basically have no meaning once you get on the air).

You might want to get the ARRL books also, as you'll get a lot more background; they are more for educating. Gordon's books do teach you a bit, but the purpose is really to pass the tests. Also, if you're great at memorizing, definitely buy this book!

Passed in just over a week of study

I signed up for some classes held by a local ham club to study for my Technician Class license. Gordon's book was the required reading. The classes were meant to be one Saturday each week for a month with the test on the final day. However after just over a week of studying the book I found I was averaging 30 out of 36 right on the practice exams, so I skipped the rest of the classes and just took my test. I passed! This book not only had the questions with the correct answers but explained the answer in a paragraph and/or illustration so I was able to understand the concepts and reasoning of the answer. I found this to be an excellent study guide and I recommend it to anyone who is just starting out.

Great price and condition!

Needed this workbook for my daughter. She constantly needs to borrow from school and they do not have enough for all the students. I was happy to find a simple solution online by buying one for $4 with shipping and handling. It was in perfect condition for what she needs! There was no markings in it!

Love the world building and mystery, HATE the romance

I picked up this book because Linnea Sinclair's blurb is front and center, and I'm always looking for science fiction romance books that I enjoy as much as I do hers. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. I'm really conflicted about this book--I love the world building and the mystery, but I hate hate HATE the romance (which is not good in a book billed as a romance!).

Felicia reads tarot cards and knows from the first time that she reads Petriv's cards that their future is entertwined...so I guess that excuses his behavior towards her? Petriv is domineering and manipulative--oh, but he's so rich and handsome that it just doesn't matter! He touches her and kisses her despite her protests, but it's all okay, because he knows Felicia's relationship with her boyfriend isn't as strong as she thinks. And besides, he's so hot and her body wants him so much! And she's very aware of the problematic way he's treating her and doesn't like it...but apparently it doesn't matter after all? Because he's so hot? Or something?

After the first few interactions like that, I started skipping/skimming the romantic and sex scenes. I would have put down the book, but I really enjoyed the world building: if I'm dating the Kibera slums correctly, this is taking place nearly 1000 years in the future, after the world has undergone catastrophic climate change. Humanity has gone through and since emerged from another Dark Ages under the guidance of an authoritarian government that strictly controls population growth and food allotment, among other things. But now that things have calmed down, people are beginning to wonder if such strict control is necessary or desirable.

From this emerges the first mystery: why has Felicia been blacklisted and unable to get permission to have a child? And woven throughout the whole story is the primary mystery, one that Petriv brings her: is Felicia's long-dead mother actually alive? If so, why did she fake her death, and what has she been doing since then?

Final verdict: if you can tolerate or enjoy this kind of hero and romance, it's a great sci-fi romance. If not, I'd probably avoid it.

Seductive, Riveting

What if luck has nothing to do with, well, luck. Some people seem to have all the luck while others have none. What if there is a reason for that? In Catherine Cerveny’s The Rule of Luck, that theory is explored with interesting results.

Felicia Sevigny loves her job as a Tarot card reader. She is very good at it, able to see into people’s lives with uncanny accuracy. Or is she just lucky? When Russian Consortium heir apparent Alexei Petriv seeks a reading from Felicia, she senses a connection that is confirmed by both her gut and the cards. But these two would seem to have nothing in common and when Alexei leaves Felicia’s shop, she is sure she has seen the last of him. This beginning scene is full of portents and sets the reader up for a riveting read.

What follows is a constant stream of action, intrigue and future possibilities, mixed with emotion and blazing passion.

Ms. Cerveny has drawn a plausible and fascinating future world where the melting of polar ice has flooded the lower elevations and only the mountain ranges offer a dry existence. Having saved the world from chaos, One Gov now oversees the world. One Gov sets all the rules. Most of humanity, remembering the hard times, is grateful to One Gove and believes One Gov is right and good, if almighty and ironfisted.

Felicia is lucky to have a nice home, a boyfriend and great job. So she has very few beefs with One Gov, despite the fact that she is a bit different. While most of the population has been modified – genetically and with technology – Felicia has not gone down that path. Her Romani family has always been determined to remain purely human. Felicia occasionally wishes that were not true when she envies others their constant connection to the CN-net (Cerebral Neural Net). But her lack of connection also means that One Gov is not connected to her, giving her seeming privacy and control that others lack. This is a relevant paradox. Most of us have embraced our ability to constantly connect with technology, and thus pretty much everyone and everything. What do we give up for that?

Not everyone agrees with the control that One Gov exerts over the world. The Russian Consortium is a powerful organization that would like to change the status quo. They have achieved power through legitimate business using less than legitimate means to make sure they succeed. Having been groomed to assume leadership of the Consortium, Alexei Petriv is positioned to make the deal of the century. All he needs is a little luck. This deal will put the Consortium in a position to affect change. As I read, I found myself agreeing with Alexei – that change was needed. I wanted them to succeed, but was bothered by the methods. Change often hurts. That is something most of us know well on some scale or another. So should I cheer for the Consortium or not?

Between Felicia and Alexei, there is an intense physical connection. But they are such an unlikely pairing. A Tarot reader and a power player. I was alternatively hoping they would get together and wanting them to walk away from each other. Mostly I wanted Felicia to walk away. The story is told from her first person perspective. She seems to be a good person but is in a situation where she has little control, is kept in the dark and is constantly threatened from one source or another. Sometimes that source is Alexei. Luck seems to be on Felicia’s side as she continually withstands everything thrown at her, albeit sometimes barely.

Even at the end of the book, I haven’t really warmed up to Alexei, though I think he has potential. I am always looking for the ‘good guy’ and that is not a phrase I would use to describe Alexei. But his character is consistently dark and passionate and vital and I would not change him at all.

The development of the relationship between Felicia and Alexei is at a pace that parallels the development of the intrigue part of the plot. The connection and the passion begin as soon as they meet and continue to smolder throughout the action of The Rule of Luck. The combination of intrigue and romance is perfectly balanced so that I never felt I was missing any aspect of either.

The romance in The Rule of Luck is not pretty. While the passion is intense, the actual relationship is sometimes dark and unnerving. The ending is a HEA for now for Felicia and Alexei. Where the relationship is going is anybody’s guess.

I would describe The Rule of Luck as dark and itchy as opposed to warm and fuzzy. The future world is far from perfect with One Gov as big brother. The romance is steamy but tumultuous. The hero has a somewhat ambiguous agenda. And the heroine may just be in over her head. All of these features are exactly what make The Rule of Luck such a seductive read for me and why I can enthusiastically recommend it for SciFi Romance readers!

Weird but very fun read.

This book focuses on a tarot card reader who can actually predict the possible future, though apparently not very acurate, considering her upcoming problems. And the head of the Russian maffia in a world were resources are very scarce because Earth is flooded poluted and over populated due to global warming. I found the idea of war over space and the rations for eating interesting. The science fiction premises in this book is very nice. I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone, so I won't go into details. But I really liked the characters and their interaction. It did sometimes bother me that the maffia is portrayed as a better alternative to corrupt government, but I could live with it for the sake of the story. The government system is plenty of scary that you start to agree a bit with the people in the novel. The plot in the book is very twisty and keeps you surprised about events in the story line. The romance is slightly more predictable as such, but that's kind of normal in this genre. What did give me some real "getting into the story" trouble in the definition of luck. It's important to the story, but the semi scientific rational behind it sounded a bit to forced to me. But maybe that's the engineer in me. All in all, I liked this book and I would definitely recommend it as long as you don't want realistic sounding scientific explanations in your story.

Excellent book for both beginner and experienced

This is an excellent book. I have an engineering degree but since I was out of college for almost 10 years I needed a book to go through every topic in such a way that doesn't look basic but refresh all that I learned back in college. This book served the purpose. Moreover it touched topics like Markov Chains and Stochastic processes. It also explains linear programming (simplex and M method) in a very simple way with tons of examples. Examples have been very well chosen and every intricate concept is explained by going through the examples step by step.

Concept of probability is very well explained in this book. Baye's theorem is a piece of cake if you read this book. Overall, I'm very happy that I chose this book.

A great textbook for end users of mathematics

This book is just very good. It is a top-quality, superbly on target solution for end users of mathematics. I had selected and subsequently used it as a textbook for a freshman calculus course aimed at prospective economics majors at an Ivy League college. My goal was to present a broad scope of the fundamental concepts of applied mathematics relevant to the social sciences, while keeping the exposition at the basic level of mathematical sophistication. Given the objective, one needs a textbook that would replace most proofs with carefully chosen exemplifications, rely on technically undemanding exercises, but enable the teacher to introduce concepts at a lively pace and tie them to interesting applications. This textbook meets all the requirements.
Our course used essentially only the more advanced parts of the book. The selection of topics was systematized by the idea of staying focused on some of the basic mathematical methods designed for solving broadly understood problems of optimization, extrapolation, and prediction. Formally, students were required to learn algorithmic skills, like finding extrema of functions of one and several variables, linear programming, basic routines for ordinary differential equations and Markov chains. Primary emphasis was put on understanding the differences and similarities between continuous and discrete, deterministic and random. The book served us well and we felt truly rewarded by its amazing collection of well selected, well thought-through real-life applications. I am enthusiastic about this book and so were very many of my students.

I used the second edition of this book many years ago in college. Its easy to understand and does a good job of covering its intended subject matter.

Good, but not Susan's Best

I'm a longtime romance fan who has learned over the years to be wary of rereleases because they usually can't live up to the author's newest work and you wind up being disappointed. I think that's the case with Obsessed, which is a good book, and is worth checking out, but will disappoint you if you're looking for the quality/level of Susan Andersen's latest works.
I'm a Susan Andersen fan, and Obsessed contains all the elements that make her writing so much fun for me: hot cranky hero, smart, "sassy" heroine, great banter and dialogue between all the characters (not just the heroine/hero), and HOT sex scenes. The emotional baggage the characters carry is well drawn and the suspense is creepy enough to live with you after the book is finished and sitting on the bookshelf again. The rapist theme itself is handled sensitively.
The main problem I had with Obsessed is that it feels like a retread of some of Ms. Andersen's other books. In actuality, since this one was published first, the opposite is probably true. This book doesn't feel as well developed or as cohesive as Exposure or Baby, I'm Yours, but has a lot of the same plot/character devices. It is very similar to Present Danger in feel, an Andersen rerelease that I think was a better book overall.
If you're an Andersen fan already, then you'll want to read Obsessed to keep your collection complete, and it's worth it as long as you don't expect too much. If you haven't read anything by Ms. Andersen yet but want to try this one, just be forewarned that it isn't her best. Any of the others I've mentioned in this review are better bets to start out.

A Dark Subject But A Good Story Full Of Human Emotion

This is a story about a very dark and serious subject that of rape. There is a rapist on the streets. He only attacks on the night of a full moon and he carves a broken heart onto the chests of his victims. A keepsake for them to remember him by.
Vincent is a detective in the Special Assults Unit of the Seattle police department. He investigates these types of crimes and he is frustrated and getting no where in finding his attacker. Yet every full moon ends up giving him a victim. If his job is not enought to keep him dark and edgy his personal past adds fire to the flames. His ex-wife was unfaithful (more then once and everyone knew about it) and this has left a huge scar on his soul. He trusts no one especially women.
Ivy is a doctor in a trauma unit. She lives in a close knit family and is trusting and dedicated to her job. She is finally ready to take to start dating now that she is done with medical school. She has moved out of her aunt and uncles garage apartment and is moved into a new unit right next door to Vincent.
There first meeting is not the greatest but they can not deny the attraction that they feel for each other. Thinking that it will be easy to avoid each other they go about their individual businesses until the rapist hits again and the victim is sent to Ivy's unit. Vincent is shocked to see Ivy as the attending doctor and can't believe that all of his preconcieved ideas about her are wrong. Not realizing it at the time the rapist has followed the latest victim to the hospital. His "voices" have not been quited this time and he is mad about this until he sees Ivy. She quites his voices and sees her as his good luck charm.
The end result is Ivy is pulled into a situation that has her being attracted to untrusting, dark, brooding man and the object of worship by a rapist.
This is a good book and I feel that Susan Andersen was true to her characterization and her characters by not dismissing out of hand the effects that Vincent's life would have on any type of relationship that he might be involved in. The topic is dark and scary and I feel that she did justice to it. You won't find any of SA trademark humor in the book but I feel that humor would be a out of place. Despite all of this a relationship is formed that is strong and full of emotion. Don't buy this book if you are looking for a light read but DO buy it if you like suspense, romance, and are not afraid of human emotion.

Not Andersen's best, but only because she's that good

The characters were wonderfully developed and the story line was rich. Andersen takes us through the twisted tale of a serial rapist, those whom he is stalking and those who are trying to track him down. It was nice to get a perspective from all three parties.

The serial rapist, who is referred to as Hart, because he carves a heart on all of his victims, becomes infatuated with the ER doctor, Ivy, who saves the life of one of his victims. (He wants his victims to live so that they will remember him and what he did.) When Ivy starts receiving mysterious gifts and puts 2 and 2 together, she realizes that she is now the object of Hart's attention. Enter Det. D'Ambruzzi, the one night stand man who left Ivy with strong feeling of being used. D'Ambruzzi is working on the serial rapist case, while still trying to get over the horrible things his ex-wife put him through. Now he has a hot neighbor next door who is making him feel things he never thought he'd feel again, and a mad man chasing after her.

I definitely recommend this book to romantic suspense readers. If you're new to Andersen, I suggest that you also read some of her newer novels, such as Getting Lucky, All Shook Up, or Head Over Heals. You'll enjoy those even more.

About the Author

Jude Cassidy, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland and Director of the Maryland Child and Family Development Laboratory. Her research focuses on attachment, social and emotional development in children and adolescents, social information processing, peer relations, and early intervention. Dr. Cassidy serves as coeditor of the journal Attachment and Human Development. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society, and received a Boyd R. McCandless Young Scientist Award from the American Psychological Association.�Phillip R. Shaver, PhD, is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Davis. He has published several books and over 200 journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Shaver's research focuses on attachment, human motivation and emotion, close relationships, personality development, and the effects of meditation on behavior and brain. He is a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. He received a Distinguished Career Award from the International Association for Relationship Research and is currently President of that organization.

completely comprehensive book

Having read dozens and dozens or books related to attachment, I can say that I wish I had found this first. This is a comprehensive summary of nearly all the major applications and research related to attachment. It exposes the reader to numerous authors and researchers in the field, and each article has its own reference list, so finding the additional sources is painless. There is a little built in redundancy on certain aspects of the history of attachment theory, which is to be expected, but some of the research is just marvelous. I found myself ordering other books by some of the contributors, because these articles are so interesting. For any dissertation or clinical reports, this is a go-to source for attachment. The index is also incredible, and whoever compiled it should be proud.

I struggled with buying this book versus using the funds for a conference. I'm so glad I chose the book purchase. I have referred to it repeatedly when planning class lectures, while searching for the latest research for training curricula, or for enriching my knowledge of a theory or concept. It's large, unwieldy, expensive, and worth all the trouble!

Outstanding resource for my dissertation writing process!

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history and progress of attachment theory. The editors are experts in the field and have organized decades worth of literature in a comprehensible manner. The chapter authors were careful to include the pros and cons of certain approaches in addition to their thoughtful summaries. All in all, a great resource book!

Activist, lecturer and director of the new Association for White Anti-Racist Education (AWARE), Wise works from anecdote rather than academic argument to recount his path to greater cultural awareness in a colloquial, matter-of-fact quasi-memoir that urges white people to fight racism "for our own sake." Sparing neither family nor self, Wise recalls a racist rant his antiracist mother once delivered, racial epithets uttered by his Alzheimer's-afflicted grandmother and the "conditioning" that leads him to wonder, for a split-second, if people of color are truly qualified for their jobs. He considers how the deck has always been stacked in his and other white people's favor: his grandmother's house, which served as collateral for a loan he needed for college, for instance, was in a neighborhood that had formerly barred blacks. Resistance to racism, Wise declares, requires support (it's better for a group to speak out against racial tracking than for one "crazy radical" to do it), and that's presumably part of what this volume means to provide. And while Wise sometimes falls victim to sweeping judgments—the act of debating racial profiling, he declares, is "white-identified," because only whites have the luxury to look at life or death issues as a battle of wits—his candor is invigorating.
