Accounting: Text and Cases

Generally a great text BUT some concepts are glossed over a bit quickly, e.g. Bonds, Adjusting entries. The problems at the end of the chapters are appropriately challenging but there are no answers. You gotta have answers somewhere, perhaps a web site. The print is too light and difficult to read with overhead lights.

Unless you go to Haaaaarvaaard (I always forget how many A's to put), you are probably going to be a bit perplexed by the content of this book.
The cases go WAY beyond what is covered in the Chapters, and its up to the instructor to try to fill in the gaps (hopefully your instructor realizes this).
I have found myself referring to my textbook from my intro accounting course more often than this book itself in order to grasp the concepts at hand. Seriously, this book is a punishment to anyone who has to buy it for school. And its FREAKIN heavy to haul around across campus.

Comprehensive but surprisingly relevant

Accounting: Texts and Cases is not your ordinary accounting text book. It successfully do away with the serious-type discussion that elicits a lot of zzzz's while reading. This book has combined detailed story-like presentation of issues and topics making Accounting concepts easier to understand. Numerous real-life examples and illustrations make the concepts more relevant.

How I hope that more textbooks are written this way. It gives learning a new twist making study more interesting. Again, after a long while, we find books like this that we wish we could keep beside our work tables to be used in the future. Curiously, the large space in the margins also provides a thoughtful space for comments and insights. Truly, this book has been designed to become a significant tool in learning accounting.

I've never look at accounting the way this book presented it. Quite satisfied and delighted with it.

Currently an associate professor in Sam Houston State University's Mass Communications program, Anthony Friedmann has an M.A. from Harvard University and a B.A. and Ph.D. in English from Columbia University and was trained as a filmmaker at the London School of Film Technique. After twenty-one years of writing, producing, and directing film, multi-image, and video, he taught video production, interactive multimedia, and scriptwriting at various colleges. He continues to write scripts for corporate clients and also to develop independent projects. His work ranges from feature film to corporate video for English, American and French clients. Bartleby, which he wrote and directed, won Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 1971. He is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, and the Broadcast Education Association.

Everything about the book was fine, but the CD was glued to the seem of the book. The glue is not removable from the CD and so the CD is useless.

Crash Course on Astrophysics for the masses

This is essentially a quick primer on astrophysics, written in a clear and easy to understand manner without dumbing down the contents. It reminds me of what I had learned in high school and college but my understanding after reading this book is a lot better because the examples were so much better. I wish the three authors taught my science courses!

The book covers fun topics including black holes, warp drives, solar systems, galaxies, multiverses, superstring theory, M-theory, unique star types, space colonization, and time travel along with equations with basic algebra concepts explained throughout.

Astrophysics for the uninitiated ... not to be missed.

This is an extremely well done book. The authors are to be particularly commended for excellent coordination between topics, referencing each other across chapters. Given the breadth of the topics, the effort to insure integration and coherence is notable.

Starting with "astronomy 101", recounting history and discoveries to provide understanding of 'how we got to the present', the book moves from the solar system outward ... finally to the cosmology of the universe. At the start concepts are elemental, imparting knowledge many with interest in astronomy learned in early years. As the story grows more complicated, astronomy becomes astrophysics with authors incorporating necessary physics background. There are extensive discussions on aspects of galactic structure, star types, stellar evolution. Later, in the book there are select chapters on special relativity, general relativity, black holes, time travel. It is a seemingly whirlwind tour, but one well designed and described. The authors have taken great pains (and succeeded) in helping us understand what they have learned about the universe and associated complex physics.

As a grade school child, I became fascinated with astronomy, encouraged by a Cal Tech aeronautical engineer neighbor who was similarly attracted. Not having joined the astrophysics family, reading this book rekindled the old interest. On a higher level anyone pondering the core existential questions lacks adequate knowledge without a grasp of the nature of our universe. This is a good volume from which to find that knowledge. Bravo!

A Great Book for "Universal" Perspective

This is one the most fascinating and enjoyable books I have read. For someone like me who is an astronomy and physics novice, but yet captivated by the cosmos, this book is more than I could have hoped for in terms of combining fun reading with education. DeGrasse Tyson and the other authors do a great job of explaining complex concepts with understandable terms and examples, while also providing enough of the science and math foundation and principles to challenge and allow the reader to exercise his or her brain. It is written for the truly curious, not for the passive. It is a book to fully contemplate each chapter, not to rush. It also provides plenty of fun and almost incomprehensible quick facts with which readers can amaze their family and friends. With all of the recent strange events going on in the world, this book is fun and smart escapism, with fascinating real facts but also yet to be explained phenomena, certain to keep things for us here on Earth in "universal" perspective.

About the Author

Hemant Kumar Pathak is a professor and head of the School of Studies in Mathematics and the Director of the Center for Basic Sciences at Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University. Dr. Pathak is the author of nearly 50 textbooks for undergraduate and post-graduate students and the author or co-author of nearly 250 publications. Dr. Pathak is an editorial board member of the American Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics and the Journal of Calculus of Variations as well as a reviewer for the American Mathematical Society. His research interests include nonlinear analysis, general topology, Banach frames, and integration theory.

Ravi P. Agarwal is a professor and the chair of the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University–Kingsville. Dr. Agarwal is the author or co-author of more than 1,000 scientific papers. His research interests include nonlinear analysis, differential and difference equations, fixed point theory, and general inequalities.

Yeol Je Cho is a professor in the Department of Mathematics Education at Gyengsang National University and a fellow of The Korean Academy of Science and Technology. Dr. Cho is the author or co-author of nearly 400 publications. His research interests include nonlinear analysis with applications, inequality theory, and the geometry of Banach spaces.
