About the Author

Brett McLaughlin is a bestselling and award-winning non-fiction author. His books on computer programming, home theater, and analysis and design have sold in excess of 100,000 copies. He has been writing, editing, and producing technical books for nearly a decade, and is as comfortable in front of a word processor as he is behind a guitar, chasing his two sons and his daughter around the house, or laughing at reruns of Arrested Development with his wife.

Brett spends most of his time these days on cognitive theory, codifying and expanding on the learning principles that shaped the Head First series into a bestselling phenomenon. He's curious about how humans best learn, why Star Wars was so formulaic and still so successful, and is adamant that a good video game is the most effective learning paradigm we have.

Gary Pollice is a self-labeled curmudgeon (that's a crusty, ill- tempered, usually old man) who spent over 35 years in industry trying to figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up. Even though he hasn't grown up yet, he did make the move in 2003 to the hallowed halls of academia where he has been corrupting the minds of the next generation of software developers with radical ideas like, "develop software for your customer, learn how to work as part of a team, design and code quality and elegance and correctness counts, and it's okay to be a nerd as long as you are a great one." Gary is also a co-author of Head First Object-Oriented Analysis and Design.Gary is a Professor of Practice (meaning he had a real job before becoming a professor) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He went to WPI because he was so impressed with the WPI graduates that he's worked with over the years. He lives in central Massachusetts with his wife, Vikki, and their two dogs, Aloysius and Ignatius. When not working on geeky things he ... well he's always working on geeky things. Dave West would like to describe himself as sheik geek. Unfortunately no one else would describe him in that way. They would say he is a professional Englishman who likes to talk about software development best practices with the passion and energy of an evangelical preacher. Recently Dave has moved to Ivar Jacobson Consulting, where he runs the Americas and can combine his desire to talk about software development and spread the word on rugby and football, and argue that cricket is more exciting that baseball.Before running the Americas for Ivar Jacobson Consulting, Dave worked for a number of years at Rational Software (now a part of IBM). Dave held many positions at Rational and then IBM, including Product Manager for RUP where he introduced the idea of process plug-ins and agility to RUP. Dave still laments the days when he use to sit in a cube and write software in the city of London. This is where he believes he cut his teeth writing big insurance systems with nothing but a green screen and a process flow chart.

Decent Introduction to OOA&D

I like the Head First series, and even Head Rush, for its innovative and fun approach for introductory software topics. I've had small concerns on all of them but I have never been as ambivalent as I have for this book. I know a big part of this problem was that it was rewritten expeditious (I am still not sure of the reason why) and it shows throughout the book with spelling, logic and code errors.

You can tell that the first chapter was rushed. There are several spelling and programming mistakes. The most egregious is where they ask you to look through some code to find what "FIRST" you change and then they answer that question with a much smaller problem (the main problem was they forgot to add a return statement (pg.5) and they write about the inconsistency of using String based searching). It has also been mentioned by several reviewers of the use of the method name "matches" which only makes sense for regex not for an equals operation. I also did not like the search example (how can you not think of price in a search?). The best part of this chapter is the mantra that should be practiced by many engineers: "Make sure your software does what the customer wants it to do."

The next few chapters are definitely better (though still some spelling mistakes). They are a good read for beginners and intermediate programmers on gathering requirements, change of these requirements and analysis. The ideas are a bit simplistic though it is good to get many programmers used to the idea of UML and use cases and using them to drive requirement gathering and textual analysis. Intermediate and advanced readers familiar with use cases will gain more from reading Alistair Cockburn's "Writing Effective Use Cases" (or will already have read it) and for further UML reading should go with "UML Distilled" by Martin Fowler.

When the book gets back to design I see some problems with the coding. The designer has this bizarre idea of abstracting all properties (under the guise of "encapsulate what varies") into a Map attribute to lessen the amount of subclasses for instruments. While initially this may seem a good idea it gets rid of all type-safe coding (you can now safely assign an instrument type to a backwood for the instrument), you cannot have behavior from the instruments (this is mentioned in the book) and if you put a property with one letter misspelled or capitalized out-of-place you now have a bug, one that you might have trouble finding thereby increasing maintenance costs. Too much flexibility makes the code ambiguous.

After design, the studies get to solving really big problems, architecture, design principles, and iterating and testing. These chapters I enjoyed much more especially the chapter on design principles with the beginning mantra that "Originality is Overrated." This chapter goes over basic principles such as OCP (open-closed principle), DRY (don't repeat yourself), SRP (single responsibility principle) and LSP (Liskov Substitution Principle).

Then the book last chapter (the ooa&d lifecycle) sums the lessons in the book in one large (somewhat contrived but these type of examples always are) program for the Objectville Subway. Then two terse appendixes dealing with ten additional OOA&D topics and OO concepts should make the reader realize that this book is just an introductory sliver of what needs to be learned for a sagacious software acumen.

This book is useful for programmers with a bit of Java (or C#) knowledge who want to get a good overview of OOA&D. This book is useful because it teaches important OO vernacular and a simple holistic approach to iterative development. If the book did not have a "quickly done" feeling, better design and fewer mistakes I would have liked this book more. This book is a good candidate for a second edition. If you want a more thorough explanation of these topics I recommend "The Object Primer" by Scott Ambler as one of my favorite books for a good introduction to OOA&D.

The most creative presentation of software design principles! (And especially for Beginners)

Am I really the first to write a review on this new installment? Well, let me start with a huge five stars for this new addition to the Head First series!

I had been waiting for this book to hit the shelves a while, since I absolutely loved the innovative approach of the Head First Design patterns book. This one was no different in the way it clearly and creatively presented key principles to good object-oriented design and educated the reader on how to approach designing software for the real world from requirements gathering all the way to anticipating and designing for change.

A few things about this book - in my opinion, there is probably no better way to present the world of software design to a beginner. Instead of talking about abstract concepts, the writers present the material using concrete scenarios, and through-out the book, the reader is encouraged heavily to think through the pitfalls and problems and come up with solutions - there is no better way to learn. There are lots of exercises and even specific places to write ones ideas down.

Some topics covered are of course good object oriented principles like encapsulation and delegation, requirements gathering, use cases, anticipating changes, class diagrams, UML and more. The book only briefly touches (but does not go into too much detail) on state diagrams, sequence diagrams, unit testing and other concepts which are a huge part of software design, in the last chapter. While it does not go into these subjects deeply, it does not leave the reader completely without any knowledge on these topics either.

It does cover more than enough to enable a reader to become very well versed in architectural principles. Best of all, the information is presented in a way where it will stick forever. The whole point is not to cover everything there is to know, but for you to really GET IT, on what is truly crucial to know.

This book is not for seasoned architects or for those who do not appreciate comical diagrams and pictures on every page (Even though, anyone with a sense of humor would appreciate the fun way the information was presented). If however, someone is confused about object oriented design and has only heard the buzz worlds but doesn't know how it all comes together - this book will ensure that they are never confused again. Not only that, but after reading this book, they will be armed with tried and tested principles of experience of what kind of design works for long term solutions vs what is a nightmare.

Another thing to mention is that all the code examples in this book are in Java (as all Head First books are). This is certainly not a problem, even if you do not code in Java, because the principles are the same no matter the language, and C# .NET users in particular will not have any problems following the code examples.

The book does assume prior programming knowledge of an object oriented language in order to follow the code. This is not a book to learn how to write code in a programming language. It teaches how to design and architect your project, with the whole software life-cycle in mind.

There are a few useful appendixes in the back to quickly define and explain the basics of software design elements used in the book (like UML for instance).

Overall, it is a great book for anyone interested in software design principles! Best of all, you will get through this book QUICKLY, because with the creative and fun way that you will be learning, it will be hard to put down.

Charles William Daniel (1871-1955) was a maverick free-thinker whose tiny publishing house had august links with many of the most influential thinkers and movements of the 20th century. All the Proof, and In a Short a manner of Days!

Does it work? You betcha, yes!

After beginning only the first chapter, I decided to follow suit on one of the anecdotes the author shares --as an example to the methodology at work here as a means to manifestation. Several pages in she references a time when during one of her daily travels she happened to be walking somewhere and stopped and found herself gazing at a lovely rose tree displayed inside the window of a florist. She wished to receive one, and stated and intended it so, exactly as she teaches in the book, and went about her merry way. A few days later, she was hosting Easter, when she received a pre gathering delivery from one of her guests...the rose tree...turns out the guest actually had requested that Easter lilies be sent, but the florist ~mixed~ the order up, and the author ended up with exactly what she had intended.

Well..having read that, I decided to put that exact suggestion into use, intending that I would receive flowers in the next few days-- figuring Start small, with no actual attachment to the outcome.

This afternoon, my husband called, saying he was hitting the grocery store on the way home, did I want anything? Between the time of the call and his arrival home, I remembered the flowers, and thought to myself, oh good, hopefully he will pick up the standard white roses we often grab to put on the table in our kitchen area, but without my prompting.. In he came with all the bags, and no flowers. I wasn't phased, figured, I'd maintain my intention, and that was that.

A minute or two later he went back out to close the garage door or whatever. I, at this point, was busy going through the mail, so had my back to him. When I happened to turn back around to say something, there in my line of sight were, yes, you already guessed it-- flowers! Not the white roses, but instead an exquisite arrangement of red and white roses mixed in with branches of cherry blossoms, and a lovely assortment of beautiful flowers. I was absolutely and utterly stunned, and still am. I don't know about you, but that was all the proof I could possibly need, and will be continuing my studies with Ms Florence Scovel Shinn, and this book!

I do want to add --- I have been avidly and actively reading quite a few of the prayers in Susan Shumsky's books as well--- they are profound in the depth of their power, and I cannot recommend them enough - Instant Healing and Miracle Prayers are my go to's; I have to give additional credit where it is unquestionably due. The prayers are truly healing in removing a multitude of blocks,fears, and other issues in my life, and I'm now a strict believer and dedicated to reading them aloud at least once daily. Some of those prayers deal with healing our mindsets of lack to not feeling we deserve the highest and best things that God/the Universe/our higher selves/whatever higher power you believe in has to offer. And will offer us if we remember to ask, work on our mindsets in thinking and speaking positively, and trusting that no matter what, the outcome will come about as good, if not better than we could ever have expected (white roses vs gorgeous bouquet), with focus, surrender, and persistence in following the steps ... Start simple, go from there, and you can count on seeing the results in the blink of an eye as I did...

Timeless advice

The book is dated, but the advice is solid - it's true that "thoughts become things," but you kind of have to meet the Universe/God/Whomever halfway and do the work yourself, too. I think that's what sets this book apart from books like "The Secret" (which reads like garbage, IMO, but to each their own). This is less about wishing and more about attitude - but let me tell you, once you get your mindset right, interesting things will start happening. Read with an open heart and an open mind - and trust!!

So good

Eckhart Tolle is my bible but this is my second choice of all time favorite books. I saw it mentioned in Tosha Silver's Outrageous Openess and picked it up. I read it cover to cover in three days (I have three small kids so that's a big deal....) and I'll be rereading it... probably forever. I'm Buddhist so I have to replace the frequent mention of Jesus or God with "The Universe" or "The Divine" since I'm a nonbeliever but it really didn't hang me up at all. It's crazy powerful... read it.

About the Author
Robert J. Gatchel received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1973. Dr. Gatchel is currently Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and is on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Health Psychology. He has published 10 other books, as well as over 140 journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Gatchel is also the recipient of a Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institutes of Health. His primary clinical and research interests have been in the fields of health psychology and behavioral medicine, with a particular focus on the etiology, assessment, and treatment of chronic pain disability.
Dennis C. Turk is the John and Emma Bonica Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Research at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is a founding member and currently serves on the Board of Directors of both the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Pain Society. In 1993, Dr. Turk was the recipient of the Outstanding Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, Division of Health Psychology. Dr. Turk has published 9 books and over 190 journal articles and book chapters.

Great introduction with a perfect learning curve

This is a well thought out guide to acquiring experience and comfort in creating games with Unity 5. The author isn't just another guy with expertise, he is an excellent teacher who knows what to share to help you gain skills (and remember them!) at the right times and in the right order. I was spurred into writing this review when, for the 4th time in as many chapters, he wrote what I was thinking and was spot on. When a tech book seems like it's reading your mind it is a very good experience. So far I've been extremely happy with the results.

There's nothing here that isn't also in tutorials online, but I've read (and watched videos of) a bunch of those and found them wanting. None of those resources have been as grounded in the basics nor have they offered a smoother learning curve than this book. It's a great intro and I feel better equipped to learn more on my own.

Great Introduction to Unity and to the Process of Computer Game Development

This is an excellent resource for someone who wants to learn how to build and distribute computer games. It walks through the entire process, end-to-end, using real-world examples. While it will not turn a programmer into an artist, level designer, or animator, it will show the programmer how to interact with those people, to consume the assets they produce, and to incorporate those assets into the game.

When I first began using computers in the 1980s, I was fascinated with computer graphics. Not being very artistic, though, I was never able to do much more than simple images and line drawings. Additionally, despite the fact that I have been programming computers for over 20 years, the process of creating computer games seemed extremely complicated because of the need to handle partical physics, collision detection, lighting and shadows, and a whole host of other concerns that do not involve code. I recently became aware of Unity, an environment for creating both 2D and 3D computer games, and I was anxious to learn more about how to use it.

This book assumes the reader knows almost nothing about how to build computer games and only slightly more about programming. The author provides excellent examples, starting in the very first chapter, for how to use the Unity editor (including the use of MonoDevelop for developing scripts to control various game objects). While the example in Chapter 1 is a traditional "Hello, World" application, Chapter 2 walks the reader through the process of building a complete 3D world akin to first-person shooter games like Doom and including collision detection to prevent the player from walking through walls. Later chapters introduce 2D graphics, heads-up displays, sound effects and music, and the use of Internet-based resources and web-service APIs. These are not trivial examples; they are complete tutorials that show step-by-step how to use the Unity editor and write the code to do something interesting and realistic. While necessarily simplistic, they cover nearly the full range of processes (including the step to build the game to deploy to a variety of platforms) a game developer would go through to build a computer game.

The code in the examples is well-structured, and the author emphasizes the need to keep things modular in order for the project to be maintainable as it grows in size and complexity. The author also acknowledges the areas where he is simply touching on a subject, and he provides a number of external resources where the reader can go for more information. The book is very well written and the examples are complete while also being digestible. The author is not only knowledgeable about this topic but also able to communicate his knowledge clearly to his readers.

Best book I've read involving game programming

I've never read a book involving programming that was so easy to follow, so this was a great change of pace. The book goes through many of the basics of game programming in unity, and eventually delves into more complex topics like netcoding and using event listeners to communicate occurrences in the game itself. I got it originally in pdf format, and acquired the book after. Having both was quite useful to be able to quickly search things and reference the book without opening more windows. Overall, a quality book that really explains everything in detail for a beginner to follow.

What Came Before the Big Bang?

Though time and space had started to curve like a sagging clothesline, there wasn’t wholesale panic in physics, because the chance that the line might snap apart didn’t quite exist yet (black holes, which snap space and time, were brought into the picture later on). Brilliant equations are devised to keep reality intact, so the very fact that the mathematics was so arcane kept some very disturbing ideas away from the general public. But this all changed with the advent of the big bang theory. In one stroke, time snapped in two. There was time as we know it, which arrived on the scene with the big bang, and there was something else—�weird time, pre-�time, no time?—�that existed outside our universe.

Following Einstein’s lead, let’s see if we can visualize reality outside our universe. For the sake of convenience, we’ll put the riddle this way: “What came before the big bang?” There’s no better way to visualize the problem than stepping into an imaginary time machine that’s whisking us back some 13.7 billion years. As we get close to the unimaginable explosion that began this universe’s creation, our time machine is exposed to extreme danger. It took thousands of years for the infant universe, which was superheated, to cool down enough for the first atoms to coalesce. But since our time machine is imaginary to begin with, we can imagine it coasting through superheated space without melting or flying apart into subatomic particles.

Getting within a few seconds of the big bang, we feel we’re nearing the goal. “Seconds” means that time exists, and now the only challenge is to shave seconds down to millionths, billionths, and trillionths of a second. The human brain doesn’t operate at such fine scales, but let’s assume we have an onboard computer that can translate trillionths of a second into human terms. Eventually we arrive at the smallest unit of time (and space) that it is possible to imagine. William Blake’s famous lines of verse, “Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand / And Eternity in an hour,” is coming true, although an hour is much, much too long. At this point, when the scale of the cosmos was infinitesimally tiny, our onboard computer goes haywire and unexpectedly, nothing can compute.

Our whole frame of reference has dissolved. There is no matter or energy, just a swirling chaos, and within this chaos there are no rules of the kind we call the laws of nature. Without rules, time itself falls apart. The captain of our time machine turns to the passengers to tell them how bad the situation is, but unfortunately, he can’t, for several reasons. As time collapses, so do concepts like “before” and “after.” To the captain, we no longer left earth at a certain time and arrived later at the big bang. Events are all gummed together in an unimaginable way. The passengers can’t cry, “Let me out of here,” either, because space has also dissolved, rendering “in” and “out” useless concepts.

This breakdown at the very threshold of creation is real, even if our time machine isn’t. No matter how hard you work at it, regardless of how fine the slivers of time you shave, the threshold cannot be crossed—�not by ordinary means, because, you see, the big bang “occurred everywhere,” so it was not somewhere to where we could travel.

We are left with two options. Either “What came before the big bang?” is an impossible question to answer, or else extraordinary means must be discovered that could possibly reveal an answer. One thing is certain, however: the origin of time and space didn’t happen in time and space. It happened somewhere extraordinary, which, luckily for us, means that extraordinary answers aren’t out of place—�they are demanded. With that in mind, let the cosmic riddling begin.

Grasping the mystery

“Before” and “after” are concepts that make sense only within the framework of space-�time. You were born before you could walk; you will reach old age after middle age. The same isn’t true of the birth of the universe. It has been widely theorized that time and space emerged with the big bang. If that’s true—�and it’s only one possibility, not a fixed assumption—�then the real question is “What came before time began?” Is that any better than the first way of putting it?

No. “Before time began” is a self-�contradiction, like saying “when sugar wasn’t sweet.” We are squarely in the realm of impossible questions, but that’s no reason to give up in advance. Quantum physics took to heart a conversation between Alice and the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-�Glass. After Alice announces that she is seven and a half years old, the Queen retorts that she is a hundred and one, five months, and a day.

“I can’t believe that!” said Alice.

“Can’t you?” the Queen said in a pitying tone. “Try again: draw a long breath, and shut your eyes.”

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying,” she said. “One can’t believe impossible things.”

“I dare say you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Quantum behavior forces us to be even more tolerant of impossible things. There is nothing ordinary about the conditions at the time of the big bang. To grasp them, some cherished beliefs must be challenged and then cast aside. First, one must realize that the big bang wasn’t the beginning of the universe but of the current universe. Ignoring for now whether the current universe was created from another universe, physics can’t actually trace the cosmos back to the absolute beginning. Taking measurements only works when you have something to measure, and in the very beginning there was an infinitesimal sliver of something, without order of any kind: no objects, no space-�time continuum, no laws of nature. In other words, pure chaos. In this unimaginable state, all the matter and energy harnessed in hundreds of billions of galaxies was compressed. Within a fraction of a second, expansion accelerated with inconceivable speed. Inflation lasted between 10-�36 (1/1 followed by 36 zeros) to about 10-�32 seconds. By the time inflation ended, the universe had increased its size by a staggering factor of 1026, while it cooled down by a factor of 100,000 times or so. A commonly accepted (but by no means definitive) scenario maps the birthing process as follows:

•10-�43 seconds—�The big bang.

•10-�36 seconds—�The universe undergoes a rapid expansion (known as cosmic inflation), under superheated conditions, enlarging from the size of an atom to the size of a grapefruit. There are no atoms in existence, however, or any light. In a state of near chaos, the constants and the laws of nature are thought to be in flux.

•10-�32 seconds—�Still unimaginably hot, the universe boils with electrons, quarks, and other particles. The previous rapid inflation decreases, or takes a pause, for reasons not fully understood.

•10-�6 seconds—�Having cooled dramatically, the infant universe now gives rise to protons and neutrons that are formed from groups of quarks.

•3 minutes—�Charged particles exist but no atoms yet, and light cannot escape the dark fog that the universe has become.

•300,000 years—�The cooling process has reached a state where atoms of hydrogen and helium begin to form out of electrons, protons, and neutrons. Light can now escape, and how far it travels will determine from this point onward the outer edge (the event horizon) of the visible universe.

•1 billion years—�Through the attraction of gravity, hydrogen and helium coalesce into clouds that will give rise to stars and galaxies.

This time line follows the momentum produced by the big bang, which was sufficient, even when the universe was the size of a single atom, to produce the billions of galaxies visible today. They continue to be driven apart by the force of the initial unimaginable expansion. Many complex events have occurred since the beginning (whole books are devoted to describing just the first three minutes of creation), but for our purposes, it’s enough to view the rough outline.

Because we can all envision how a stick of dynamite or a volcano explodes, the big bang seems to fit our commonsense view of reality. But our grasp of what happened is fragile. In fact, the first seconds of creation call into question almost everything we perceive about time, space, matter, and energy. The great mystery about the emergence of our universe is how something was created out of nothing, and no one can truly comprehend how this occurred. On the one hand, “the nothing” is unreachable by any form of observation. On the other hand, the initial chaos of the infant universe is a totally alien state, being devoid of atoms, light, and perhaps even the four basic forces of nature.

This whole mystery can’t be avoided, because the same birthing process continues, right this minute and all the time, at the subatomic level. Genesis is now. The subatomic particles that the cosmos is built upon wink in and out of existence continually. Like a cosmic on/off switch, there is a mechanism that turns nothing (the so-�called vacuum state) into a teeming ocean of physical objects. Our commonsense view of reality sees the stars floating in a cold, empty void. In actuality, however, the void is rich with creative possibilities, which we see playing out all around us.

Already the argument feels like it’s getting abstract, ready to float away like a helium balloon. We don’t want that to happen. Every cosmic mystery has a human face. Imagine that you are sitting outside in a lawn chair on a summer day. A warm breeze makes you drowsy, and your mind is filled with half-�seen images and half-�realized thoughts. Suddenly someone asks, “What do you want for dinner?” You open your eyes and answer, �“Lasagna.” In this little scenario the mystery of the big bang is encapsulated. Your mind is capable of being empty, a blank. Chaotic images and thoughts roam across it. But when you are asked a question and make a reply, this emptiness comes to life. Out of infinite possibilities, you pick a single thought, and it forms in your mind of its own accord.

This last part is crucial. When you say “lasagna”—�or any other word—�you don’t build it up from something smaller. You don’t construct it at all; it just comes to you. For example, words can be broken down into letters, the way matter can be broken down into atoms. But of course, this isn’t a true description of the creative process. All creation brings something out of nothing. It’s humbling to realize that even as we feel comfortable being creators, immersed in infinite words and thoughts, we have no idea where they come from. Do you know your next thought? Even Einstein looked upon his most brilliant thoughts as happy accidents. The point is that creating something out of nothing is a human process, not a faraway cosmic event.

The transition of nothing into something always achieves the same result: a possibility becomes actual. Physics dehumanizes the process and does so with incredible precision. In unimaginably small scales of time, vibrations of quanta come out of emptiness and quickly merge back into emptiness, but this quantum on/off cycle is totally invisible to us. The rules governing physical creation must be deduced. You can’t apply a stethoscope to the outside of the Superdome in order to discover the rules of football, and that’s essentially what cosmology is doing, in attempting to explain the origin of the universe. Logical deduction is a great tool, but this may be a case in which it creates as many problems as it solves.

A baffling beginning

There’s little doubt that the objects in space didn’t exist before the big bang. But did space and time (technically, the space-�time continuum) also emerge with them? The standard reply is yes. If there were once no objects, there was no space or time, either. So what was the pre-�created state like? It didn’t have an inside or outside, which are properties of space. As the infant universe expanded, it wasn’t expanding with anything around it, and now, while billions of galaxies operate in outer space, the universe isn’t like a balloon with a skin. Here again, the concepts of before and after, inside and outside simply don’t apply.

Are we left with anything to hold on to? Barely. “To exist” suggests the possibility that even without time and space, things might happen. Here’s a useful analogy. Imagine that you are sitting in a room where you notice that objects are moving slightly: the milk in your cereal bowl is jiggling, and you can feel a vibration coming up through the floor.

As it happens, you are deaf, so you have no way of knowing if something is pounding on the walls of the room from the outside. (Some people might be sensitive enough to feel a vibration in their bodies—�let’s leave this aside.) But you can measure the waves in your cereal bowl and the vibrations of other objects, including the floor, ceiling, and walls. This is roughly how cosmologists confront the big bang. The universe is full of vibrations and waves emitted billions of years ago. These can be measured and inferences drawn from them. But uneasiness appears if we ask a simple question: Can someone who is deaf from birth actually know what sound is? Though there are measurable vibrations associated with sound, feeling them is not the same experience as hearing a solo violin, the voice of Ella Fitzgerald, or a dynamite explosion.

In the same way, measuring the light from racing galaxies and the background microwave radiation in the current universe (this radiation is a residue of the big bang) doesn’t tell us what the beginning of the universe was like—�we are working from inferences, just like a deaf person observing waves in his cereal bowl, and this limitation could be a fatal flaw in any explanation of where the universe came from.

We can still try, from our standpoint here in our space-�time, to explore laws of nature that operate outside space and time. In particular, physics can resort to the language of mathematics in the hopes that its existence doesn’t depend on which universe you happen to live in. Most of the speculation that follows keeps faith with mathematics as something eternally valid. Even in an alien universe, where time goes backward and people walk on the ceiling, if you add one apple to another apple, the sum is two apples, right?

However, no one has ever proved that this faith is actually valid. The mathematics that’s applicable to black holes, for example, is locked in speculation, because a black hole is totally impenetrable. Mathematics could be the product of the human brain. Take the number zero. It hasn’t always been around. By 1747 BCE, the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians had a written symbol for zero as a concept, but it wasn’t used as a number for calculating purposes until around AD 800, in India, long past the heyday of Greek and Roman culture.

Deepak Chopra and Menas Kafatos have written a masterpiece in 'You Are the Universe.' This highly readable and infinitely intriguing book, offers a roadmap to our very existence. It combines spirituality with hard science, and addresses the pertinent questions about our very reason for being. What is our purpose, why are we here, what role do we play in the cosmos; these are important questions that are thoughtfully explored in this book. The material presented here is perhaps the most important and enlightening that you'll ever read.

Stephen Hawkins needs to change his book from "The Theory of Everything" to "You Are Everything!"

Awesome book and despite the subject matter being complex at times, the authors did a great job relating hard to understand scientific concepts with real life analogies. The greatest sages and prophets throughout time have espoused the same things but did not have the science to go along with their teachings. As stated in the headline, Stephen Hawkins needs to change his book from "The Theory of Everything" to "You Are Everything." If we humans had the capability to see the smallest subatomic particles, when we looked at trees, houses, other humans,...everything would look the same. You wouldn't see an outline of a human, the inside of the human, or things outside the human. The "inside" of the body would look just like the "outside" of the body. There would not be a location for "me or I." There would be no inside/outside concept. The sun, trees, plants,... are just as important to us as any organs "inside" our bodies.

I read a one star review for this book that related it to the same snake oil Deepak has been preaching for 40 years. My question, how did snake oil work? How does the placebo work? Where is the mathematical equation for the effect of the mind on the cells in the body? And if the mind can effect cells that are inside the body why wouldn't it have the same effect on things "outside" the body? Thank God (as the expression goes or in this case the Universe) that we do have the observer effect in quantum mechanics. Maybe the greatest breakthrough in science - along with this book!

AMAZING! I have been searching for a book of this caliber for a long time. Modern science seems to be on an unavoidable collision course with ancient spiritual wisdom (we are all one with the universe), and these two experts support their theories with cutting edge research and facts. I couldn't ask for more from a book on this subject. HIGHLY recommended!
