Deep in knowledge yet Accessible

Tom Bisio has been writing books about Chinese medicine and martial arts for a while now. The first book "A Tooth From the Tiger's Mouth" and this one are both the result of long term training, learning, pondering and feeling the results of the training and both books say much more than what they might seem to at first glance. Mixing the training experiences and Chinese medicine knowledge with information provided by senior practitioners like famed Ba Gua instructor Zhao Da Yuan, disciple of the late Li Zi Ming, the book addresses the meaning, function, purpose and method of what is called Ding Zhi Ba Zhang- the eight fixed or patterned palm walking method. Many Chinese martial arts include "internal" training as part of their curriculum. The arts that have been called "internal" are those that base the whole training around methods that develop the body from the inside out, and begin with softness. This book explains not only how to practice the 8 patterns that comprise the ding-shi (8 "fixed" palms), but explains the purpose of the training in a level of detail that has not been typically approached in print, but saved for personal disciples.
The exercise is developmental on a number of levels, which require that the student manage their body posture and movements and breath in great detail. How to do this is discussed both on the physical level and that of understanding the major pathways of the qi. Quoting from the Nei Gong Zhen Chuan (the authentic transmission of Nei Gong) Tom reiterates: " 1. Real knowledge of Nei Gong requires a thorough understanding of the vessels and collaterals." Further: "2. Once the vessels and collaterals are understood you must observe the patterns. After one is familiar with the channels and collaterals it is necessary to understand that there are certain patterns that pertain to the whole body. If the patterns are not understood, all discussion of the channels and collaterals is empty talk." The Ding Shi Ba Zhang makes use of posture and movement that create patterns designed to allow for the opening of the channels, increasing of whole body use of power, ease of movement, increase of alertness and other benefits. This process results in abilities that when combined with tactical and technique knowledge and ability make for almost miraculous results. This book carefully and methodically lays out these foundations for Bagua practitioners to follow in order to progress beyond merely tactical understanding of martial arts.
Anyone wishing to live up to the promise of the internal arts and take them beyond just relaxation ("empty talk") knowledge contained in this volume must be acquired, and then mastered through long training. I've practiced Baguazhang for many a year, and I have not reached as high as even my potential. Such a manual shows the methods and the means to get there. All practitioners of the internal arts should own this book.

At the very top.

I am 67 and have studied internal martial arts, as well as other Bodymind approaches, all my life. I have read most of what has been published on these topics, though it is rarer and rarer now that I find a book which really gives me something. This book, as well as others by Tom Bisio, is among the ones that do.
I have corresponded with Tom, though I have not yet met him. As well as being extraordinarily knowledgeable and accomplished, Tom is also humble and seems to me pretty much free of the ego trips that unfortunately are so common in the martial arts. He is also unusual in that he genuinely wants to share all he knows, making it as clear and accessible as possible without (it seems to me) holding anything back.
In this book on Bagua walking, he goes into great depth (as is appropriate, and also rare) about the precise details of posture. If you do not know this, I am telling you: that is the million-dollar secret in the internal martial arts. Getting the correct posture, then maintaining this while moving: that's the ticket! (As to the fighting, learning techniques is just to keep you interested while you move with good posture; combat skill comes through intuitively sensing relationship, not by learning techniques.)
Anyway, Tom gives as good instruction as one can get in a book, and this particular walking practice is second to none for health and np meditation, and as a solid foundation for fighting if you are so inclined.

The missing link between martial arts and medicine

Many books on Chinese martial arts talk about the relationship between Chinese medicine and Chinese martial arts. Some even say that the best martial artists also understand the medicine as well. This book explains how Chinese medicine links up with the Chinese martial art of ba gua zhang.

As usual, Mr. Bisio is able to explain Chinese medicine in simple, approachable terms, allowing people who have not devoted years of their lives to graduate school to be able to understand the basic foundational concepts of Chinese medicine. What's more, in this book he is able to relate those foundations to the practice of walking the circle found in ba gua zhang.

This book transitions effortlessly from easy to understand theory to practical descriptions of the movements involved. Mr. Bisio explains how each of the postures of the ding shi (a practice of circle walking in ba gua zhang) relates to the various meridians described in Chinese medicine. This discussion allows the practitioner of ba gua zhang to deepen their understanding of the art and its practice. It also allows one to tailor their practice to address specific health concerns, as is talked about by many of the past masters of this art.

This book is invaluable for practitioners of ba gua zhang of any lineage, but it can also be an excellent resource for practitioners of Chinese medicine who seek to further enrich their understanding of the fundamentals.

Fascinating, but Lovecraft beginners should start elsewhere

In terms of readability or pure enjoyment, this title ranks low among the myriad Lovecraft titles. However, for the Lovecraft devotee, it offers enlightening insights into the author's writing. There is quite a hodge-podge of tales to be found in these pages. "The Tomb" is a fairly standard horror piece, "Imprisoned With the Pharoahs" is a story ghost written for Harry Houdini which I count among Lovecraft's lesser tales, "In the Walls of Eryx" is a compelling, uniquely Lovecraftian science fiction story set on Venus. "The Horror of Red Hook," while harkening to the types of unworldly themes Lovecraft came to be known for, is a somewhat dense story which I had unaccustomed trouble reading--largely, I feel, because it was written in the third person. "The Festival," "He," and "The Strange High House in the Mist" concern ancient rites and hints of unearthly terrors while also hinting at the dream worlds that Lovecraft so often contemplated; not surprisingly, I find these stories to be the best ones in this collection.
The really interesting parts of this book consist of a number of early tales and fragments. There are four stories Lovecraft wrote during his teens, and it is almost incredible to see the distinctive Lovecraft voice and style so well developed at such an early age. "Poetry and the Gods" and "The Street" are unusual and bear an ethereal air that did not find its way into his mature writings, while "The Beast in the Cave" and "The Alchemist" foreshadow the stories whose fame we now celebrate. The four story fragments are fascinating; though incomplete, they easily fit into a Lovecraftian world in that certain sometimes obscure references point to elements, characters, and themes developed more fully in other stories. One begins to see that all of Lovecraft's tales, Mythos and non-Mythos, share a mysterious thread or foundation. It is for this reason that I would not recommend reading this book without having read some of Lovecraft's better known stories. Certainly, those not yet fascinated by Lovecraft will reap small rewards from reading the fragments and early writings, and the other tales collected here are much less satisfying than those of the Cthulhu Mythos.

NOT LOVECRAFT'S BEST

I guess THE BEST OF H.P. LOVECRAFT spoiled me. When I got to this book, I found the stories not near as frightening or appealing. There are some fragments in this book, though, and the most important thing is that they ARE fragments. No pastiche authors here, thank you. Then there's a part of the book showing off some of HPL's earlier work. It's interesting to compare his earlier work with his later work, to see how he matured as a writer. By the way, did you know that HPL ghost-wrote a story for HARRY HOUDINI? I didn't either, until I read this book. I give this book 3 stars because I feel that only books that are TRULY OUTSTANDING deserve 4 or 5 stars. Only books that are absolutely terrible and have no merit deserve 1 or 2. So I give this book a conservative 3 stars.

About the Author
Roy F. Baumeister is currently the Eppes Eminent Scholar and Professor of Psychology at Florida State University. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Princeton in 1978 and did a postdoctoral fellowship in sociology at the University of California at Berkeley. He spent over two decades at Case Western Reserve University. He has also worked at the University of Texas, the University of Virginia, the Max-Planck-Institute, the VU Free University of Amsterdam, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Russell Sage Foundation, the University of Bamberg (Germany), and Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Baumeister's research spans multiple topics, including self and identity, self-regulation, interpersonal rejection and the need to belong, sexuality and gender, aggression, self-esteem, meaning, and self-presentation. He has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and from the Templeton Foundation. He has over 500 publications, and his 31 books include EVIL: INSIDE HUMAN VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY, THE CULTURAL ANIMAL, MEANINGS OF LIFE, and the New York Times bestseller WILLPOWER: REDISCOVERING THE GREATEST HUMAN STRENGTH. The Institute for Scientific Information lists him among the handful of most cited (most influential) psychologists in the world. He has received several major awards, including the William James Fellow award (their highest honor) from the Association for Psychological Science, and the Jack Block Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

More meaty than any "self-help" book, more helpful too!

I'm a reasonably successful professional, wife, and mother who has never had any problems with most of the things discussed in depth in this book (drug addiction, alcoholism, smoking, weight problems, obsessions, gambling, etc).
The reason I bought the book was for the discussions of self-management. They've been very thought provoking for me. I have trouble with setting goals and achieving them, prioritizing, and "self-handicapping", especially procrastination. Now I can think more clearly about how I get in my own way, and I can develop better, more effective strategies for coping.
The "implications for parenting" in the final chapter are also amazingly useful. Though pretty straightforward, they elegantly tie together so many common sense ideas about what good parenting is all about. Having standards. Monitoring. Enabling the child to develop self-control. Instilling the capacity to delay gratification. Challenging the child's ability to control his or her attention may not be as "common sense" as the others, but in context, I can see it's importance.

Book Contains Many Insights On Addictive Behaviors

As the mother of a child suffering from an eating disorder and with a spouse suffering from alcohol self-regulation issues, I found this book to contain a vast wealth of helpful information. Even though it was written in 1994, I found 15 years later that the book provides excellent material that I had not really seen published elsewhere on these topics. I keep going back to it time and time again in my search for answers to help my family members.

On page 9 of the book, it mentions three items that are important ingredients for self-regulation including: 1) standards (for example, the thermostat cannot operate without being set on a particular target temperature); 2) monitoring the current circumstances (people can only regulate themselves successfully if they pay attention to what they are doing); and 3) people must have some means of operating on themselves in order to bring about the desired changes or responses.

I wanted to write this review in the hope that this book can perhaps help others. Chapters address: Self-management: Taking care of yourself; Thoughts out of control; Failure to control emotions and moods; Controlling impulses and appetites such as alcohol, smoking, eating too much; Gambling, Shopping, Aggression and a section also on the Implications for Parenting.

The central idea of this work as major contribution to our way of thinking about ourselves

This book reveals at the outset a central concept I for one have never really given serious thought to. It is the concept of self- control on how we 'override' all the time impulses, feelings, wishes,demands, habits. In other words it points to a picture of consciousness in which there is continual struggle and decision.
Of course the main focus of the book is in describing and dealing with situations in which control has been lost, in which the self- regulation mechanism has failed. The authors contend that American society is today seeing a vast acceleration in the growth of 'loss of control' disorders.The various drug addictions, the obsessive behaviors in gambling, sexuality, other areas of life mark out this loss of our own ability to manage ourselves. Even in the area of overriding our own thoughts there is breakdown and loss of control.
Reading and studying this work is then ideally a way of better knowing, and improving ourselves.

Good Overview Book

I'm a graduate student working on my Library Science degree. This book was the main text for my Archives and Management class. It provided a good introduction to the topic of archives. Millar offers examples from her experience as a Canadian, but she also presents general principles which are applicable to all Western archivists. Easy to read, the examples were relevent, and the content was informative.

I am giving this book 5 stars for content, is has lots and lots of really good Information.
HOWEVER, I have never seen so many typos and grammar mistakes in a published book in my life. WTF??! Did nobody proof read this??? Who publishes a book full of mistakes??? It must have been typed on a 1905 Underwood by a 3rd grader.

About the Author
Sondra is the author of six books, among them, Landmark Essays on Writing Process; Felt Sense: Writing with the Body; 'Stepping on My Brother's Head' and Other Secrets Your English Professor Never Told You, creative nonfiction essays written by well-known writing teachers across the county and co-edited with Charles Schuster; and On Austrian Soil: Teaching Those I Was Taught to Hate, a memoir that tells the story of what happened to Sondra when she found herself teaching Austrian teachers whose parents had been Nazis. This book was a finalist in the 2006 Independent Booksellers Award for memoir and led to the creation of the Holocaust Educators Network, which Sondra now directs at the Memorial Library in New York City. Useful introduction....

I am currently using this as my primary text in a writing class. The students respond well to the authors' consistently upbeat tone, and variety of suggestions for writing (titled 'ways in' at the end of each chapter). There could be some better integration between the instructional part and the rather slim anthology, but on the other hand, the anthology section of any textbook dates it rather quickly, and it's often useful to share with students other samples of fiction chosed by different taste (mine) rather than the authors'. There are plenty of tools for generating writing ideas, and the workshop chapter (chapter six) is one of the most useful I've seen in any writing textbook--instead of just giving warnings about being nice and supportive, they offer a four-round response session which my students have responded to very positively, and a checklist of 20 things to look for or consider in improving a piece.

My only criticism is not really of the book, but of the textbook's companion website. It's difficult to navigate for students, doesn't offer that much, and offers only locked pdfs--what if I want to print out a copy for myself (the professor) to jot a few notes on? Can't do it.

A Nonfiction Writer's Essential

I'm in the middle of my Nonfiction Workshop class, but it's already abundantly clear that this book is essential to Nonfiction writing. The book breaks down terms and details about how to start and move through your nonfiction piece. It also includes essays from other writers as examples. This book is laid out great to take notes, and fits in purses and back pockets as easily as backpacks. I HIGHLY recommend this book for how it delivers ideas and pieces and how easily everything a nonfiction writer needs to know comes together at their fingertips.

This book goes through the craft of creative nonfiction with excellent short examples. It's a wonderful basic book for anyone thinking about writing a memoir or personal essays. Creative writing 101 with lots of excellent writing exercises to get things moving and on track. Bravo to the authors!!

About the Author
Aljos Farjon headed the temperate section of the herbarium at the Royal Botanic gardens, Kew 1996–2006. He has published 10 books and more than 120 papers mainly, but not exclusively, on conifers. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, Chair of the Conifer Specialist Group of IUCN (the World Conservation Union) and a member of both the International Association for Plant Taxonomy and the Royal Horticultural Society’s Conifer Registration Advisory Committee.

GREAT Book On The Biology Of Conifers

I came into possession of this book in the strangest way ... but I'm so glad I did! I asked a botanist for a book that would help me with tree systematics (identifucation) and this book was recommended. It was a little strange to make the purchase, because i was really looking for info on oak and birch trees. And secondly, it just so happened ... that i had found some very unique conifer trees on the tops of the southern Andes mountains, and i really wanted to identify them. So what the heck, i bought the book. What a pleasure, when it arrived!! Author Aljos Farjon has done a terrific job of describing conifer trees, how they have evolved and changed over time, and how the various aspects of their biology ... produce the tree that is standing in front of you today. Furthermore, the book is very readable, and the color plates are high quality. i was encouraged to discover that I could identify which Family 'my tree' in the Andes belonged to ... it didnt take long at all. This book is Highly Recommended if you have an interest in conifers, tree identification, tree biology ... or you just love trees. Big thanks to the author!

I wanted to like this book more than I did.

This book fills a gap in the popular literature on conifers: there's really a strong need for a comprehensive review of the natural history of conifers. But if that's what you are looking for, you will be disappointed here. Still, this volume has some strengths.

Some of the high points of this text: (1) There a many photos of species where it is difficult to find good photographs; most notably of the Southern hemisphere species. It is almost worth keeping the book on my shelves just for the "tree porn". (2) Again, it is really the Southern species where this book really provides new details. If you are looking for a work that discusses the new finds in Indo-China or New Caledonia this is a book not to be missed.

Where I was disappointed: (1) Most notably, this book is in dire need of editorial coherence. It reads mostly like a collection of magazine articles that have been very lightly reshaped into a thematic structure. This book really would have benefited from a more disciplined analytic structure. (2) I really wanted to see more sustained discussion of the evolutionary linkages of the conifers--especially in reference to Northern hemisphere species. There's bits and pieces here (even chapters with titles that look like they will provide the sustained analysis that I'm looking for) but the discussions are just so scattered as to be frustrating.

In short, this is the type of book that you can open up at almost any point and start reading--and that's not necessarily a good thing. Again, I really wanted to like this book more than I did.

A Book Worthy of its Subject But Somewhat Flawed

This book has a lot going for it. The author has been most recently head of the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and has had a front-row seat as a conifer taxonomist during the development of three key disciplines of the last few decades: molecular genetics, cladistic analysis, and earth history. Unlike many taxonomists he glories in making extensive field trips throughout the conifer world, for business and pleasure. His writing style is generally clear and engaging, and occasionally hits some very high notes. And he is a good photographer and a talented botanical artist. Thus he has created a modern treatment of the conifers that would have been impossible just a few years ago, and he has imbued it with deep concern for the biodiversity of the order Coniferales and the preservation of rare and endangered species. He interprets "natural history" broadly and is free to inquire into any aspect of conifer lore, from evolution to forest products. Surely this book will accomplish the author's goal of bringing more respect to these tribes of trees that are major parts of the silva in both hemispheres.
There is a wealth of fascinating information here, and the author is an affable guide taking us along on numerous exciting quests. The stories of discovery of new-to-science conifers like Wollemia and Xanthocyparis add spice to the overall conifer story, as do travels to New Caledonia and other venues of remarkable trees. But not everything is equally well done. Some chapters are densely academic, heavy going for amateurs lacking technical credentials. A preoccupation with numerical measures of diversity, and an emphasis on extinct groups may not appeal to many.
Mistakes or faux pas are fairly common, and range from the trivial to the profound. A few examples: use of the term "appendices" where American English would use "appendages" (with neither term in the too-skimpy glossary)adds puzzlement to an already dense anatomical discussion of cone structure; reference to a 3600+ year-old Utah juniper known since 1956 to be less than half that age; numerous fine botanical drawings whose plant parts are unlabeled and lack scales (i.e. "X 2"); a dismissal of the possible evolutionary importance of hybridization in conifers despite its commonness in pines and firs; an equally abrupt dismissal of the idea of reticulate evolution, an area of active research; a weak treatment of mycorrhizae which does not mention the profoundly different types found in Pinaceae vs. Cupressaceae -- surprising for a taxonomist; a description of the mutualism of nutcrackers and white pines with several material factual errors; a statement that bark beetles invade the cambium, while they actually invade the phloem; omitting windborne soil particles from the ingredients of "canopy soil", which accumulates in branch crotches and sustains epiphytes; attributing clones of Pinus pumila to shoots sprouting from the roots whereas it is due to rooting of branches in contact with the ground. The author is often on shaky ground writing about wood. For example, he errs in stating that Great Basin bristlecone pine "has some of the densest and hardest of all woods", or that sugar pine and western white pines are "nonresinous", or that wood of Cupressaceae is "more fibrous" than that of Pinaceae (he must mean finer-grained), or that hollow trees grow new wood on the inside as well as the outside of the trunk. The fleshy fruits of Torreya are labeled as "seeds" in a photograph. Though geography seems one of his strong suits, the author writes incorrectly that Port-Orford-Cedar "is restricted to mountains on the border between California and Oregon". He states twice that California's only Taxaceae species is Torreya californica, overlooking Taxus brevifolia. In cataloging that state's biodiversity he claims 22 pines. In my book Conifers of CaliforniaConifers of California, I list 18 pines (including P. washoensis, around which there is some controversy)plus one pinyon pine hybrid. I cannot quite see where 4 more species have immigrated to this state.
The book's index is not as lengthy and inclusive as a book of this scope deserves. You will not find cambium, seeds, rust diseases, roots, or many other terms to take you to useful information.
Even more grievous, however, is the very skimpy bibliography. The purpose of this book is to make available much of what has been learned about conifers in recent decades, and a reader should be able to follow up some of the many leads provided here.Yet the bibliography lists a mere 52 items. Ten of these are the author's own previous works and 16 are on paleobotanical topics. Nine are general biological works or are about other plants than conifers. Why does this matter?
Well, take for example the author's statement that drooping pine needles may be an adaptation to protect them from dwarfmistletoe infection. He gives no indication whether this is his idea, or the result of someone's research. If you want more on this, you cannot get help from the literature list. This is true of many speculations, possible matters-of-fact, and arguments made throughout the text. The feeble bibliography not only leaves much of the text unsupported, but impedes readers from further pursuit. Besides, it would have been a simple matter to list the most useful 100 conifer books as a special feature, tying this new volume to the historical development of conifer science.

Fodder for classroom discussion

This was an assigned book for Adolescent Development in grad school. Each topic has about 4 pages (in essay format) of research information that is pro or con for a specific topic. Our class was divided into two groups and assigned either the pro or con aspect of the issue. For example, underage drinking: we presented the valid (?) reasons for allowing children to drink alcohol before the age of 21 (one reason noted was that people under the age of 21 can join the military so why wouldn't they be allowed to drink) and the other team presented the reasons it was a bad idea. This book is loaded with topics; it appears to be massive research projects by some unfortunate souls. I don't see me using this book outside of the class assignments. But I may give it to my teen daughter for debate; it would be useful for her to see how the pro and con version of the same topic can be developed.
