Great book with a poor Kindle impementatiom
By J. Peck
My review is of the Kindle edition. This is a great book, but don't buy the Kindle edition. Get the paperback.

Pros:
-This is the gold standard book on the topic from a very thoughtful author who communicates a dry subject in an interesting an informative way.

Cons:
-The appendix is NOT included. The description doesn't tell you this. The appendix is a quick reference guide for emergencies. The appendix is one of the most useful parts of the book.
-The tables are scanned at too low of a resolution and are unreadable for me (using the Kindle app on a Windows RT tablet)

Pharmako/Dynamis, Revised and Updated: Stimulating Plants, Potions, and Herbcraft, by Dale Pendell

***This paperback edition has a new introduction by the author and updated content.

This is the second volume of North Atlantic Books’ updated paperback edition of Dale Pendell’s Pharmako trilogy, an encyclopedic study of the history and uses of psychoactive plants and related synthetics first published between 1995 and 2005. The books form an interrelated suite of works that provide the reader with a unique, reliable, and often personal immersion in this medically, culturally, and spiritually fascinating subject. All three books are beautifully designed and illustrated, and are written with unparalleled authority, erudition, playfulness, and range.

Pharmako/Dynamis: Stimulating Plants, Potions, and Herbcraft includes a new introduction by the author and as in previous editions focuses on stimulants (including coffee, tea, chocolate, and coca and its derivatives) and empathogens (notably Ecstasy). Each substance is explored in detail, not only with information on its history, pharmacology, preparation, and cultural and esoteric correspondences, but also the subtleties of each plant’s effect on consciousness in a way that only poets can do. The whole concoction is sprinkled with abundant quotations from famous writers, creating a literary brew as intoxicating as its subject.

The Pharmako series also includes Pharmako/Poeia (which covers tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, opiates, salvia divinorum, and other substances) and Pharmako/Gnosis (which addresses psychedelics and shamanic plants).

Review
“A poet, ethnobotanist, and amateur chemist, he’s the best writer on drugs to come along since the late Terence McKenna.”
—The Village Voice

“Dale Pendell, most elegant eloquent writer on drugs because both scientist and poet, has exuded a book as charming as The Compleat Angler or Brillat-Savarin’s Physiology of Taste. It will be preserved amongst the scriptures of an entheogenic revival that will recognize the scribe Pendell as an inspired prophet and forerunner.”
—Hakim Bey

“Dale Pendell’s books are elegant tapestries of accurate chemistry, pharmacology, and botany, interwoven with rich poetical imagery. I use them as textbooks in a large annual undergraduate class which I teach at the University of California in Berkeley. The students love them.”
—David E. Presti, PhD, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, UC Berkeley

Only For the Serious Ethnobotanists
By druoak01
Dale Pendall is not only a prolific writer educating his audience using highly visual writing. He causes the reader to become inspired and immersed in his descriptive historical fact, scientific identification including biological chemistry and mysterious nature of mind altering plants. You will learn a great deal from his writings and I highly recommend both this tome as well as its companion. The informative and literary elements of Dale Pendall's ethnobotanical manuals should be used in university classes. They exemplify how knowledge can be taught in a both artistic and scientific fashion! A must have for the serious seeker.

Mayday, by Nelson DeMille, Thomas Block

Twelve miles above the Pacific Ocean, a missile strikes a jumbo passenger jet. The flight crew is crippled or dead. Now, defying both nature and man, three survivors must achieve the impossible. Land the plane. From master storyteller Nelson DeMille and master pilot Thomas Block comes Maydaythe classic bestseller that packs a supersonic shock at every turn of the page....the most terrifyingly realistic air disaster thriller ever. Like a growing tidal wave, the escaping air was gathering momentum. A teenaged girl in aisle 18, seat D, near the port-side aisle, her seat dislocated by the original impact, suddenly found herself gripping her seat track on the floor, her overturned seat still strapped to her body. The seatbelt failed and the seat shot down the aisle. She lost her grip and was dragged after it. Her eyes were filled with horror as she dug her nails into the carpet, as the racing air pulled her toward the yawning hole that led outside. Her cries were unheard by even those passengers who sat barely inches away from her struggle. The noise of the escaping air was so loud that it was no longer decipherable as sound, but seemed instead a solid thing pounding at the people in their seats......

Taut, tense and terrific.
By A Customer
I was coerced into buying this book because of an interest in flying and action/adventure novels. But once I started reading it I didn't remember why I needed coersion. It simply a terrific read from begginning to end. I thought that it would be similar to books like Arthur Hailey's 'Airport' which I had read years ago and quite enjoyed but I wondered how DeMille was going to do anything new with the genre. Although a big fan of the 'X-Files' and the like I was just about "conspiracied" out. But DeMille makes the missile tragedy and cover-up very believable. The attention to detail (as he acknowledged, Thomas Block's aeronautical knowledge was vital)is excellent but he never lets the technicalities (either the problems experienced at the altitude or the militaria) bog the story down. You find yourself in the cockpit right next to John Berry with your heart pounding.
Interestingly the romantic sub plot was barely touched on and was refreshing in this age of sex/sexual tension influencing everything. Rightly, the protaganists put this to one side to concentrate on the more important issues at hand. This leads to the sexual tension being there, just in the periphery. 'Mayday' is brilliantly written and while originally published in the late 1970s, the version that I bought was updated for the 1990s (in much the same way the Stephen King updated 'The Stand') and I can honestly say it's an excellent book. I bought 'Mayday' about 3 months ago and quickly got my hands on and read 'Spencerville' and 'The General's Daughter' by DeMille (both of which are excellent) and we also now have 'Gold Coast', 'Plum Island' 'Word of Honour', 'The Talbot Odyssey' and 'By the Rivers of Babylon' in our bookcase.
For fans of the action side of the story, I can also recommend Clive Cussler, whose earlier books resemble 'Mayday', including coincidentally one called 'Mayday', although I think its American title was 'The Mediterranean Caper'.

Early, underwritten work by great action author
By Peter Lorenzi
Nelson DeMille is one of my three or four favorite authors. He passed Tom Clancy and John Grisham some time ago.
DeMille writes with an almost frantic pace, using regular guy heroes who emerge from the ruins of tragedy or terror. "Mayday", about a jet airliner accidentally damaged by a missle over the Pacific, offered DeMille an early chance to develop his style. Placing almost al of the action in the fuselage of the damaged plane limits his stage. The details of decompression at high altitude are not pretty. The male and female leads are heroic. The victimized pilot of the fighter that fired the deadly shot is a good, if side story.
The conclusions are somewhat predictable. I finished with small disappointment, having read much of his later work earlier.

DeMilles best
By David A. Spearman
From the first page to the last, the action carrys you in the cockpit with all the fear and excitement possible. As with all his books he does not leave much time for anything else until you are done and then want another. I have read all his books and only wait for his next to make my day.

The gospel is the offering of God's presence to men. It is the invitation into a life of experiencing Him. The inspiration of our lives must be our past experiences of Him; our satisfaction must be our present experience of Him; our hunger is for our future experiences of Him. I would much rather touch Him than attempt to define Him. I would rather move Him than seek to simply understand Him. I would rather know Him than merely perform His works.

Are you with me?

Let us live our lives enjoying this glorious gospel!

This is a little gem of a book if you want to understand the process of learning to be in the presence of God. Eric's understanding of the difficulties and the solutions are comprehensive. Knowing about God is totally different than being with God. I recommend this to anyone who is searching for "more" of God. Thank you Eric Gilmour for writing what you have learned about this subject, it has helped me tremendously.

Cooperation (Psychology Revivals): The basis of sociability, by Michael Argyle

Is human nature cooperative?

Man is often said to be a social animal – but what does that mean? Michael Argyle believed that one of the most important components – our capacity to cooperate – had been overlooked and indeed that the whole notion of cooperation had not been properly understood.

In this book, originally published in 1991,the author showed hewas critical of earlier approaches, andput forward a new and extended understanding of what cooperation consists of, showing the form it took in different relationships and its origins in evolution and socialisation. He offered new solutions to intergroup and other social problems and took a new look at language and communication as a cooperative enterprise.

Red Rising, by Pierce Brown

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER •NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, BUZZFEED, AND SHELF AWARENESS

“Ender, Katniss, and now Darrow.”—Scott Sigler

Pierce Brown’s relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”

“I live for you,” I say sadly.

Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, February 2014: Look beyond the inevitable comparison to The Hunger Games--Red Rising is the first book of a gritty, complex trilogy that blazes its own trail. On desolate Mars, the protagonist, Darrow, is caught in a class system that thrives on oppression and secrecy. He is a Red, the lowest member of society, born to toil in the bowels of the planet in service to the sovereign Golds. When Darrow suffers a devastating loss and betrayal he becomes a revolutionary, taking on a dangerous role in an attempt to bring about social justice. Questions of fate, duality, and loyalty, evolve in a cruel test of war between the sons and daughters of the ruling elite. By turns brutal and heartfelt, Red Rising is nonstop action with surprising twists and unforgettable characters. --Seira Wilson

From Booklist
A lot happens in this first installment of a projected trilogy. Darrow, living in a mining colony on Mars, sees his wife executed by the government, nearly dies himself, is rescued by the underground revolutionary group known as Sons of Ares, learns his government has been lying to him (and to everybody else), and is recruited to infiltrate the inner circle of society and help to bring it down from within—and that’s all inside the first 100 pages. This is a very ambitious novel, with a fully realized society (class structure is organized by color: Darrow is a Red, a worker, a member of the lower class) and a cast of well-drawn characters. Although it should appeal to all age groups, there is a definite YA hook: despite being a veteran miner and a married man, Darrow is 16 when the novel begins. If told well, stories of oppression and rebellion have a built-in audience, and this one is told very well indeed. A natural for Hunger Games fans of all ages. --David Pitt

Dark, violent, and really interesting futuristic fantasy. I could barely put it down.
By Sandy Kay
If you took a little Lord of the Flies, a little Hunger Games, and a little Hogwarts Academy, then mixed it up with some Roman history and set it hundreds of years in the future you might come up with this book. With all the "borrowed" elements one might think it would feel a little "been there, read that" but that would be wrong. It took a little while at the beginning for me to get into the story, but once it kicked into gear, I could barely put it down.

The story is set on the planet Mars in a caste-driven society where your entire role in life is determined by the caste (denominated by color) into which you are born. Children are often genetically (or otherwise) modified to suit their caste status and be easily identifiable by color. The Reds are at the bottom, slaves forced to live and mine deep beneath the surface for a necessary substance. They live short lives of hardship and oppression (certain songs and dances carry a death sentence), but are unaware of the lies they've been told.

Darrow is a young Red miner, married to Eo until she is killed by the government for a small act of rebellion. Then everything in his life changes and the story really starts when Darrow is recruited by a revolutionary group to infiltrate the ruling Gold society. The first step is to be accepted at the Institute where the elite Gold young people are trained for leadership.

I don't want to give away any more of the story because it is so much better to read it without knowing what is going to happen next. I have to warn you that there is a lot of violence in the book. The level of brutality makes it often hard to remember that most of the characters are only teens/young adults.

This book is not in the Young Adult category, but I could see teens wanting to read it, especially guys, because most of the characters are teens. Parents who monitor their teens reading, especially younger teens, need to be mindful of the violence, though it is likely no worse than they see in video games and television. Even so, I wouldn't recommend it for younger teens. The swear words are mostly made up for the book, being things like "bloodydamn," and "piss." There are some "off stage" rapes but no sex scenes.

As I said above, once the book got moving, I could barely put it down. This is the first part of a trilogy and I cannot wait for the next book.

I love it. I hate it.
By Cora L. Foerstner
Just the other day, I was telling my daughter that I don’t like trilogies, but they seem to find me. Red Rising found me.

A debut novel and the first book in a trilogy, Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a science fiction dystopian novel set on terraformed Mars. Dystopian novels abound and some people are getting tired of them, but I love them.

Brown’s book has been compared to Hunger Games, The Lord of the Flies, and Ender’s Game. I agree with the comparisons. As you might have guessed, the novel isn’t wildly unique—it borrows from everywhere, including Roman mythology. However, I did enjoy the book and put aside another book I was having trouble finishing to read it. The borrowing doesn’t bother me; after all, Shakespeare borrowed extensively.

It’s also been called dazzling, which I don’t agree with. The book is violent, brutal, graphic, and needs a shot of feminist sensibility. It also reflects our world in disturbing ways while reflecting on the complexity of individuals within society.

Brief Summary:

Mars is divided into classes with color designations: Golds are the rich, powerful rulers, above everyone, and Reds are the lowest dregs in this cast system, lower than the Grays, Coppers, and Pinks.

Darrow, the sixteen-year-old protagonist, is a red “Helldiver,” living underground. He discovers Reds have been lied to and that Mars is inhabitable and has been for generations. After his wife is killed by a Gold, he joins a group of revolutionaries and is transformed, like Pygmalion/My Fair Lady, into a Gold. He infiltrates a prestigious school for the elite. His goal is to take down the unequal society and overthrow the Golds.

Review:

Okay for some honesty, I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I cannot recommend it without some caveats. Before I get to the negatives and positives. Here are some general observations:

•It starts slow, which I didn’t mind too much, but the story didn’t grab me right away.

•Once Darrow leaves the underground, things get interesting fast and the pace never slows; it becomes a hard to put down book.

•Mars’ society reflect our world so much that it’s impossible not to make comparisons. There is a complexity in the novel that makes this an interesting aspect and invites introspection. The complexity begins to breakdown the pure good vs pure evil dichotomy in Darrow’s mind and that might have dominated the novel.

Things I Like:

1.Writing: The writing is excellent. I expect good things from future books by Brown.

2.Mars: The world building and the plotting were shiny—it’s a tightly woven, gritty story with an easy to understand world system.

3.Vendetta: There’s lots of revenge. Since I feel rather powerless to right the wrongs of the world, I like stories with revenge and a hero who plunges forward to make things right.

4.Multifaceted: Once Darrow enters into the world of the Golds, things become more complicated. He likes and understands some of his fellow students, yet knows he may have to kill them.

5.Point of View: His first person narrative is honest and pulls me into his story and makes me care about him, but there are some problems with his character (see below).

6.World: Brown creates a brutal Machiavellian world that is detailed, from the variances in life, language, education, and power. By the end of the story, you know that one language slip on Darrow’s part may be his future downfall because at least one person heard.

Don’t let the comparison to Hunger Games fool you. This is a fast paced, extraordinarily violent book, and makes Hunger Games seem like kindergarten violence.

I liked the story and was caught up in the fast, tightly pace story, but . . . I have some concerns.

Things I Didn’t Like:

1.Less Than Complex: Several reviews claim that the characterization in Red Rising is more complex and developed than the characterization in Hunger Games. I disagree. Katiness is a reluctant hero and the complexity of her character is at once subtle and nuanced. Other Hunger Games characters are well developed and multifaceted. Our hero Darrow is about revenge, with an occasional insight. He gives himself over to violence, revenge, and hatred with little subtlety and passing insights.

2.Perfect Hero: He is also maddeningly perfect. He, a Red the lowest of the low and not educated in Gold culture, has the top scores on his test and bests all the Golds; he immediately becomes a leader; he steps into his role as a Golds with few slip ups; he’s physically strong and out fights everyone; he outwits everyone; he’s the only one who protects the helpless. He’s the old fashion Dudley Do-Right turned Spartan-Rambo, a bigger than life, perfect hero, who rescues everyone. Really?

3.Supporting Roles: The other characters, with a few exceptions, are cardboard figures with little distinguishing features to set them apart. They are secondary to and play supporting roles to Darrow. Throughout the story these “future leaders” of society acquiesce to Darrow’s leadership.

4.Sexual Violence and Rape: This is the area I find most revolting. My problem is not that there is sexual violence and rape in the story, but that everyone except Darrow accepts and ignores it. I find it unbelievable that female characters and male characters would stand for this. With all the violence and fighting, other students would fight back. After all, they are Golds and see themselves as above all others and privileged. Would they allow other Golds to be raped with impunity? Even the adult proctors don’t do a damn thing and some of the students are their sons and daughters. Only our hero has the moral fiber to take action. Really?

5.Female characters: Even Mustang, who says she hates weak females who have to be rescued, willingly gives up being a leader to follow Darrow. In the beginning of the novel, his young wife sacrifices herself so he will become a hero. I found this particularly difficult to swallow—almost a deal breaker. Although there are female proctors, none of the student leaders are female. Yet they are supposedly given an equal place among the men, yet all the females are easily overcome.

6.Violence: The violence is sometimes excessive. As an adult, I shrugged this off; however, I would recommend this book to older young adult readers. Parents should read it first to see what they are handing their teenager.

Although I have some major issues with the book, I liked it. I got caught up in the story and finished rather quickly, which probably reflects that I too am susceptible to and influenced by societal attitude that violence, sexual violence, rape, and second-class treatment of women is normal.

I think that the love/hate problems I have with this book reflect the deep seeded influence of my culture. I want things to be better in fiction. I harbor a hope that future societies will be more advanced.

When it comes to plot, quality of the writing, world building, conflict and action, I’d give Red Rising a 4; however, when it come to character development, the portrayal of women, and sexual violence, I’d give the book a 2. So my 3 star rating reflects the love/hate relationship I have with the book.

Awesome first book!
By Catfish
Near as I can tell, this is Pierce Brown's first novel. Sometimes first novels are rife with issues. Pacing issues. character development problems. Not so here. I'm quite impressed. I really enjoyed this book.

The story of Red Rising is the tale of Darrow who is a mine worker in a colony below the surface of Mars. What Darrow and his entire community do not know is that the Mars that they believe that they are striving to terraform has already been terraformed. The people on the surface live in a very structured caste society. The people below the surface work as slaves and have no idea of the world beyond and are kept that way.

The books has almost 3 acts. The story of Darrow living in the mines. The story of Darrow being enlisted as an enemy of the state and his indoctrination. And the story of Darrow going off to play with the higher ranked society "Golds" in school. It is this third act that plays out the longest and is pretty much the focus of the book. I'm not going to give away more of the story but it's worth the read.

The academy section of the book reads a little bit like lots of other novels. The Hunger Games. Enders Game. Lord Of The Flies. The mishmash of different ideas and the telling works regardless of the originality of it. Frankly, I just couldn't put it down. There are just enough plot twists including a few that i just never saw coming. Regardless of the fact that you know that Darrow will win in the end, it was the telling that makes this work. The combination of science fiction, society divisions, plotting, strategy and combat was really engrossing.

I'm very happy to have been lucky enough to get an early copy of this one and I can't wait to see what else Pierce Brown does in this series. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

In the Oresteia Aeschylus addressed the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration. In Agamemnon, a king's decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution; The Libation Bearers deals with the aftermath of Clytemnestra's regicide, as her son Orestes sets out to avenge his father's death; and in The Eumenides, Orestes is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased. Forming an elegant and subtle discourse on the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, The Oresteia is a compelling tragedy of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society.

The only trilogy in Greek drama that survives from antiquity, Aeschylus' The Oresteia is translated by Robert Fagles with an introduction, notes and glossary written in collaboration with W.B. Stanford in Penguin Classics.

As a great classic 'The Oresteia' by Aeschylus merits a full 5 stars. I will, however, question Aeschylus logic and motive in creating this play. Aeschylus was an Athenian who participated in the war with Persia and stated that he fought in the battle on the plain of Marathon. He is a patriot who promotes the glory and happy existence of Athens, the City of Athena.

At the same time, the basic concept for this play is drawn from the Odyssey. In Homer's great work Odysseus [Ulysses] learns that Agammemnon, following the destruction of Troy, manages to successfully get home to Mycenae. He arrives with much loot and with his sexual slave, Cassandra, recently princess of Troy. Agammemnon receives quite a homecoming. He and Cassandra are slaughtered by Agammemnon's wife, Clytaemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. The motive for the killings are apparently multiple. Clytaemnestra is quite understandably outraged that Agammemnon, immediately prior to sailing away to Troy, sacrificed their daughter, Iphigeneia, for favorable winds. Clytaemnestra, perhaps in revenge, takes a lover and, along with him, plots Agammemnon's death. When Agammemnon actually does arrive, another motive arrives in the form of helpless Cassandra. Paradoxically, Clytaemnestra seems to be jealous. Another stated motive is power. Both Aegisthus and Clytemnestra supposedly want to be King and Queen of Mycenae--BUT--Clytemnestra is already Queen so this can't be her motive.

She and her lover, Aegisthus, do both Agammemnon and Cassandra to death. Clytaemnestra's son by Agammemnon, Orestes, complicit with his sister, Electra, and egged on by the God, Apollo, kill both mother and lover.

These are the bare bones of the story as told to Odysseus. Aeschylus, himself, can't deviate from the 'facts' as delivered in the Odyssey because virtually everyone in the Greek World knows the story by heart. Aeschylus, quite aware of the complexities and ironies of the situation, decides to use the story for his own purposes but it is a bit of a stretch. Interestingly, In Aeschylus' Play, Clytaemnestra facing death at the hands of her own son and arguing for her life, never once uses her strongest argument i.e. that Agammemnon had slaughtered Iphigeneia, Orestes' own sister. Later, when guilt-plagued [Furies-attacked] Orestes is tried for matricide in a trial presided over by Athena--including 10 wise Athenian judges--the prosecuting Furies don't once use their strongest prosecutorial point which is, again, Agammemnon's sacrifice of Iphigeneia.

Instead, Apollo, working for the defense, says that he ordered/influenced Orestes to perform the act, therefore Orestes is innocent. Athena, who'd showed marked preference for the Greeks led by Agammemnon on the Plains of Troy, throws in her vote in favor of Orestes which apparently creates a 50-50 split, which by Athenian Law means that Orestes is freed of the Furies curse. This may be a minor point but with Athena acting as an 11th Juror there can be no 50-50 split. The play ends with Athena convincing the Furies to be 'good' and to bring only happiness to Athens. There is a lyrical paen to the benefit of glorious Athens.

Several problems: There is a 50-50 split, therefore half of the judges regard Orestes as a criminal and matricide. An extension of this is that these jurors recognize the specious nature of the defense argument. Also, Cassandra, one of the more symphathetic figures of the Trojan War and, arguably, the most sympathetic figure of this play, is also murdered. Cassandra is entirely guiltless of any crime yet her murder is never laid at Clytaemnestra's feet. Apparently the murder of a slave, even a slave of Blood Royal, isn't regarded as much of a crime. Agammemnon, however, actually is guilty of a 'crime' against Clytaemnestra by sacrificing their daughter. On the other hand, Agammemnon's defense must surely be that it was a necessary sacrifice to the benefit of the Gods and the Gods, themselves, would probably praise rather than condemn Agammemnon for this otherwise loathesome act. At the same time, Clytaemnestra does loathe Agammemnon for it and this hatred likely directs her hand. This fact is lightly skimmed over in the play. In a sense, Orestes is not only a matricide but, in killing his mother, is indirectly complicit in his own sister's sacrifice. All this is skimmed over although neither Aeschylus nor his audience can be ignorant of these facts.

I'll repeat. The major crime committed here is the murder of Cassandra, not Agammemnon or Clytemnestra. Either because of custom or because facts can be inconvenient, Aeschylus glosses over this almost entirely.

In this light, 'The Orestia', for all its strength and beauty, becomes no more than a vehicle for Athenian propaganda. It wasn't enough. Fifty years later Athens was occupied by triumphant Spartans.

Classic for Good Reasons
By jdl
The parameters of a standard mystery novel review simply do not fit. Aeschylus has been a classic for well over 2500 years. There are good reasons. "The Libation Bearers", while less well-known than "Agamemnon" is filled with the same significance and intent; and is a necessary link to "The Eumenides" with its wonderfully satisfying ending.

Great read!
By A. Nash
This is actually a really good read! I got this for a college assignment so I expected it to be somewhat boring but it really held my interest. The actual scene part of the book is a bit hard to understand but they give a translated story version at the beginning that really clears up any confusion.
